Our organization is in search of a driven, customer-focused Cryptocurrency Analyst to become part of our team in Sterling, VA.
Every day, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) manages the substantial movement of individuals, capital, and goods entering and exiting the United States through various channels, including air, land, sea, and cyberspace. The intricate nature and high volume of both physical and digital border crossings necessitate the implementation of business intelligence support services to facilitate smooth trade and travel. Additionally, robust intelligence support and big data solutions enable CBP to ensure that the movement of people, capital, and goods is conducted legally, safely, and securely.
This role is aimed at finding a proficient individual who can assist CBP officers and border enforcement agents in effectively identifying illicit financial strategies that may pose additional risks to the United States. The analyst will conduct strategic assessments to pinpoint emerging threats and develop and assess responses across CBP based on targeting protocols and intelligence-driven special operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess the relevance of data to support specific financial investigations, analyze performance and sensitivity, and outline next steps for refinement or alternative approaches to achieve desired outcomes.
- Assist in interpreting data patterns related to cryptocurrency encounters from a conceptual standpoint, focusing on red flag indicators and various schemes/methods.
- Collaborate with teams that include intelligence analysts, OSINT analysts, federal law enforcement personnel, data visualization experts, and software developers to gain a comprehensive understanding of data concerning AML and illegal cryptocurrency practices, while making recommendations to decision-makers regarding CBP s approach to threat streams. The ability to multitask effectively in a dynamic environment is essential.
- Support the identification and examination of tools utilized by transnational criminal organizations to obscure their financial transactions.
- Prepare issue papers that emphasize evolving trends among illicit actors in obscuring digital fund transfers and provide training to field and staff personnel on recognizing digital currencies and conducting preliminary analyses of findings.
- Establish partnerships with commercial vendors to assess tool capabilities that aid personnel in identifying and tracing cryptocurrency transactions and storage entities, determining suitable tools and methods for specific projects to identify networks, anticipate future threats, or analyze threat scenarios.
- Contribute to the coordination and active participation in a cryptocurrency working group focused on addressing the threats posed by cryptocurrency to CBP s identification of illegal fund transfers.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED with 20+ years of experience, or an Associate's Degree with 18+ years, or a Bachelor's Degree with 12+ years, or a Master's Degree with 9+ years, or a Doctorate with 7+ years.
- 5-8 years of experience in intelligence analysis or policy planning.
- Experience in anti-money laundering (AML).
- Background in blockchain investigations.
- Familiarity with cryptocurrency, including fund transfers and concealment methods.
- Proficiency in the complete analytics lifecycle to transform data into actionable insights, including data collection, preparation, and model building, along with knowledge of data wrangling, cleansing, and analytics.
- Able to present findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with FinCEN Data is advantageous.
- Prior experience in law enforcement or a classified intelligence analysis setting is preferred.
Clearance Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. citizen with a current/active TS/SCI clearance and the ability to obtain and maintain CBP Suitability before commencing this role.
Physical Requirements:
- The individual in this role may need to move around the office occasionally to access file cabinets, office equipment, or to communicate with colleagues, management, and clients, which may include delivering presentations.
