Summary
Our client is seeking an Additive Manufacturing CAD Engineer to drive the end-to-end CAD file lifecycle for additive manufacturing operations. This role works closely with product design engineering teams to interpret specific engineering requests, create or modify accurate CAD models and 2D drawings, review part printability, and develop support structures that help improve successful physical realization and overall print yields.
You will also manage CAD file sharing and alignment across manufacturing, product design, and vendor stakeholders, using Siemens NX and Teamcenter to support secure file transfer, version control, and CAD execution across engineering platforms.
Responsibilities
- Drive the end-to-end CAD file lifecycle for additive manufacturing operations.
- Work closely with product design (PD) engineering teams to interpret specific engineering requests and generate accurate, robust CAD files from scratch, or meticulously modify existing concepts to meet exact project requirements.
- Create CAD models and 2D drawings for additive manufactured components.
- Rigorously review additive part printability and drive support structure design and development to ensure successful physical realization of digital models and improve overall print yields.
- Manage file sharing and ensure the alignment of new CAD designs with key stakeholders across manufacturing, product design, and vendor bases.
- Serve as the central hub for all 3D printing design files, utilizing Siemens NX and Teamcenter to securely download, open, review, and upload highly sensitive CAD models, ensuring seamless file transfer, strict version control, and flawless CAD execution across various engineering platforms.
- Maintain and resolve issues lists related to file integrity and CAD geometry.
- Coordinate activities with overseas counterparts and internal teams to push process capability, ensure timely completion of deliverables, and mitigate risk ahead of schedule.
- Present detailed analysis to key decision-makers to enable commercial and design decisions.
- Maintain knowledge of additive manufacturing equipment capabilities and key process drivers; keep abreast of the latest 3D printing developments and leverage new technologies in novel ways to enable improved design capabilities.
Requirements
- Strong grasp of CAD software, specifically Siemens NX, with expertise in reviewing, creating, and modifying mechanical components, complex assemblies, and 2D drawings.
- Deep understanding of additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies, specifically including the ability to evaluate part printability and develop robust support structures.
- Proficiency in secure file transferring methods and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), specifically utilizing Teamcenter to manage file sharing and align CAD designs with cross-functional stakeholders and external vendors.
- Ability to accurately translate concepts and requests from product design engineers into robust, manufacturable CAD files.
- Ability to reconcile DFAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing) feedback with design goals, anticipate printability challenges, and provide actionable feedback to a larger team of manufacturing and product engineers.
- Fluent spoken and written English skills with an ability to articulate complex, technical concepts and issues in a clear and concise manner to audiences of mixed backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently on a variety of demanding, concurrent projects that often require creative solutions and intellectual curiosity.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with metal 3D printing and metal additive manufacturing processes (such as DMLS, SLM, or Binder Jetting).
- Experience working in a fast-paced product development or mass production environment.
Education
Equivalent practical experience is fully acceptable and welcomed. A BS in engineering (mechanical, manufacturing, industrial design, or a related field) is helpful, but not required.
