Position Summary
The OSM Mechanical Engineer owns the engineering of modular mechanical assemblies - skids, racks, headers, plumbing modules, and pre-assembled piping - from concept through shop fabrication and field delivery. This role sits at the intersection of design, manufacturing, and construction: translating contract documents into buildable modules, driving Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) decisions, and stamping engineered deliverables where required. Success is measured by modules that leave the shop complete, on schedule, and are installed in the field without rework.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
Perform mechanical design and calculations for modular HVAC and plumbing assemblies: pipe sizing, pressure drop, pump and equipment selection, thermal expansion, anchor and guide layout, structural support of skid frames.
Seal and stamp engineering deliverables (module structural frames, lifting/rigging plans, delegated-design submittals) within the jurisdictions and disciplines of licensure.
Develop and enforce DFMA standards - module envelope limits, transport and rigging constraints, connection strategies, repeatable detail libraries.
Review contract documents and specifications; identify constraints, conflicts, and modularization opportunities early enough to influence design.
Detailing & BIM
Direct and review Revit/CAD detailing and spool drawing production; own model accuracy against the fabrication tolerance the shop actually holds.
Run and resolve clash detection between mechanical modules and adjacent trades; coordinate module interfaces and field tie-in points.
Manage model and document workflow in Autodesk Construction Cloud - issues, RFIs, submittals, as-built model updates.
Fabrication Support
Serve as the engineering point of contact for the shop floor: resolve fabrication questions, approve field/shop deviations, and issue revisions without stalling the production line.
Support production planning - module sequencing, kitting, station loading, and takt alignment with the delivery schedule.
Own weld procedure applicability, material and joint specification, and support QA/QC on hydro testing, NDE, cleanliness, and passivation requirements.
Drive continuous improvement: track rework causes, close the loop from field feedback into design standards.
Project & Commissioning Interface
Coordinate with project management, the and the owner on module delivery windows, laydown, rigging, and set sequences.
Support factory acceptance testing and startup/commissioning sequences; produce turnover documentation.
Review and respond to RFIs and submittals; participate in cost and change-order technical evaluation.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor\'s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
Professional Engineer (PE) license, active and in good standing, with willingness to pursue comity licensure in additional states as project geography requires.
Minimum 5 years of mechanical engineering experience in mechanical contracting, modular/prefabrication, industrial piping, or MEP design-build.
Working command of applicable codes and standards: ASME B31.1/B31.3, ASME BPVC (including Section IX), IMC, IPC/UPC, ASHRAE, NFPA, AWS D1.1, and AWS D9.1/SMACNA for ductwork assemblies.
Demonstrated proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD; familiarity with Navisworks or equivalent coordination tooling.
Ability to read and interpret contract drawings, specifications, P&IDs, and shop fabrication drawings.
Willingness to work on the shop floor and travel to active construction sites; must meet site PPE and safety requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Direct experience with off-site/modular construction delivery - skid design, module transport engineering, or prefabrication program development.
Mission-critical or data center mechanical experience (chilled water, CDU/cooling distribution, high-purity or closed-loop systems).
Fabrication shop experience - lean manufacturing, takt production, or industrial engineering exposure.
Experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud, Smartsheet, or comparable project delivery platforms.
Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or welding engineering background.
NCEES Record holder (expedites comity licensure), PMP, or Lean Six Sigma credentials.
Competencies
Buildability judgment. Designs to what the shop can actually fabricate and the crew can actually install, not just what closes on paper.
Decision speed. The production line does not wait. Makes sound calls with incomplete information and documents them.
Cross-functional fluency. Communicates equally well with detailers, welders, superintendents, and owner\'s engineers.
Ownership. Follows a module from sketch to set without handing off accountability.
Compensation & Benefits
DSI offers a comprehensive benefits package; full details are provided during the hiring process.
Physical & Work Environment
Work is split between an office/engineering environment and an active fabrication facility and construction sites. Requires periodic standing, walking, climbing ladders, and lifting up to 25 lbs. Exposure to shop noise, welding operations, and outdoor jobsite conditions.
Why DSI
Dynamic Systems has been building the mechanical backbone of America\'s most demanding facilities since 1988 - semiconductor fabs, data centers, hospitals, and advanced industrial plants where failure is not an option. As a Quanta Services company (NYSE: PWR), we combine the agility and craft culture of a founder-built mechanical contractor with the resources, safety infrastructure, and career reach of one of North America\'s largest infrastructure solutions providers.
Off-Site Manufacturing is where DSI is investing its future. Our Tomball fabrication facility is not a support function - it\'s a production operation reshaping how mechanical systems get built: safer, faster, and higher quality than field-built alternatives. As an OSM Mechanical Engineer, your decisions ship as physical modules every week, and you\'ll see your work go from calc to weld to a set piece in a mission-critical facility. Few engineering roles offer that loop, and fewer offer it with a national project portfolio and 2,400 colleagues behind you.
