Staff Mechanical EngineerCompany DescriptionFounded by Dr. Jonathan Rothberg in 2011, Butterfly Network is a digital health company with a mission is to democratize medical imaging by making high-quality ultrasound affordable, easy-to-use, globally accessible, and intelligently connected, including for the 4.7 billion people around the world lacking access to ultrasound. Butterfly created the world's first handheld single-probe, whole-body ultrasound system using semiconductor technology, Butterfly iQ.
The company has continued to innovate, leveraging the benefits of Moore's Law, to launch its second generation Butterfly iQ+ in 2020, and third generation iQ3 in 2024 - each with increased processing power and performance enhancements.
The disruptive technology has been recognized by TIME's Best Inventions, Fast Company's World Changing Ideas, CNBC Disruptor 50, and MedTech Breakthrough Awards, among other accolades. With its proprietary Ultrasound-on-Chip technology, intelligent software, and educational offerings, Butterfly is paving the way to mass adoption of ultrasound for earlier detection and remote management of health conditions around the world.
Joining Butterfly is the opportunity to redesign the future of healthcare through the power of technology. Embark on a journey with us to maximize global impact, motivated by the idea that our products will change the lives of millions, along with the people you love.
Job DescriptionAs a member of the mechanical product development team, you will have the opportunity to use your creativity and diverse range of mechanical design experience to reinvent and influence the future of ultrasound technology. You will work as part of a cross-functional team to deliver highly refined and clinically impactful imaging solutions. As an experienced Staff Mechanical Engineer, you drive the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts to prove out designs and scale those concepts in volume manufacturing. You are expected to be independent, driven, and passionate about designing a high-quality product.
As part of our team, your core responsibilities will be:
- Lead the development and definition of core mechanical systems for complex medical imaging products and accessories - working cross-functionally to gather requirements, evaluate feasibility, perform detailed design and analysis, and create release documentation for manufacturing.
- Continuous Improvement of our way of working. Champion best practices in the mechanical and system design space and push for improvements to internal tools and standards.
- Translate top-level product and engineering requirements into detailed ME hardware technical specifications.
- Analyze mechanical architecture and design trade-offs, and provide final design recommendations.
- Design, simulate and verify mechanical, thermal, and assembly performance of all components, subassemblies, and the finished device(s) and accessories.
- Design and produce (3D Print or outsource manufacturing) fixtures / jigs to support prototyping, debugging and characterization efforts.
- Collaborate with the Electrical Engineering team to test and verify EMI/EMC/ESD performance.
- Incorporate DFx/DFM/DFA into the design process, ensuring material selection and design optimize the manufacturability and assembly of the system.
- Perform failure analysis and root-cause diagnosis for hardware issues. Implement and validate corrective actions.
- Author clear and comprehensive hardware specification documents and engineering build documentation.
- Engage and collaborate with internal cross-functional teams to resolve complex technical issues.
- Present technical issues in multi-disciplinary environments. Communicate issue status and path to resolution.
- Participate in R&D efforts to evaluate new technology solutions.
- Perform a broad variety of tasks in support of the role and responsibilities.
