Job DetailsSenior Building Automation Controls Engineer
Location: Location: Fairfax County, Virginia (approx. 20 miles south of Washington, D.C.)
Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Senior Building Automation Controls Engineer to support the design, programming, integration, commissioning, and field implementation of BAS projects across government and military facilities.
This is a highly technical, hands-on role for someone with strong Niagara N4 programming and DDC controls experience who can take projects from design and programming through startup and commissioning. The position involves extensive travel to project sites throughout the U.S. and requires the ability to independently troubleshoot complex control systems while working closely with project managers, customers, contractors, and field teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, program, integrate, and commission Building Automation and HVAC control systems.
- Develop and modify BAS programming within the Niagara N4 Framework.
- Program and integrate application-specific controllers, including Honeywell Spyder, Honeywell Optimizer, Distech Controls, and similar DDC platforms.
- Develop control logic and programming from sequences of operation and project specifications.
- Review BAS drawings, control diagrams, specifications, sequences, and project submittals.
- Assist with system design, control drawings, equipment selections, material takeoffs, and project planning.
- Support estimating efforts by reviewing project requirements and developing labor, material, resource, and schedule estimates.
- Perform BAS startup, checkout, testing, pre-commissioning, and final commissioning.
- Troubleshoot controllers, HVAC equipment, field devices, networks, programming, and system integration issues.
- Integrate BAS components using BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus, IP-based networks, and other common controls protocols.
- Coordinate project activities with customers, government representatives, contractors, project managers, and other trades.
- Support secure BAS network design and implementation for government and high-security environments.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to technicians and other controls personnel.
- Develop system documentation, progress reports, technical recommendations, and closeout documentation.
- Provide customer and end-user training on BAS operation and system functionality.
- Travel to project locations for installation support, programming, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience with Building Automation Systems, HVAC controls, DDC, or related control systems.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience with BAS integration, programming, startup, checkout, testing, commissioning, or field support.
- Strong experience programming HVAC application-specific controllers from scratch based on sequences and project requirements.
- Experience with Niagara/Tridium, including Niagara N4 programming and integration.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, automatic temperature controls, control theory, and sequences of operation.
- Working knowledge of BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus, TCP/IP, and other BAS communication protocols.
- Ability to review and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical drawings, control diagrams, specifications, and sequences.
- Experience troubleshooting BAS networks, controllers, field devices, programming, and system integration issues.
- Ability to perform material takeoffs and assist with project planning and equipment requirements.
- Comfortable working independently in the field while also providing technical support to other team members.
- General understanding of IT infrastructure and networked control systems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance and government facility access.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel up to 100% based on project requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Niagara N4 Technical Certification.
- Honeywell Spyder programming or factory certification.
- Honeywell Optimizer experience.
- Distech Controls programming experience or certification.
- AutoCAD experience.
- Experience developing or modifying BAS control drawings.
- Previous experience supporting Federal, DoD, military, or other high-security facilities.
- Experience leading BAS startup and commissioning activities.
- Experience providing technical direction to field technicians or junior engineers.
Skills & Attributes: Successful candidates will be strong technical problem-solvers who are comfortable taking ownership of projects in the field. This position requires the ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, manage changing project priorities, and maintain a high level of quality and attention to detail while working independently.
The role is best suited for someone who enjoys hands-on programming, integration, troubleshooting, and commissioning and is comfortable traveling extensively to support projects throughout the country.
