Summary

The Lead Licensed Mechanical Project Engineer is responsible for leading the planning, design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical building systems for a variety of commercial, retail, institutional, industrial, multifamily, and mixed-use projects. This role serves as a technical leader and project resource, providing engineering expertise, project oversight, quality assurance, and mentorship to engineering and design staff.

Working collaboratively with Project Managers, architects, engineers, clients, and consultants, the Lead Licensed Mechanical Project Engineer ensures projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable codes, industry standards, and client expectations. This position exercises independent engineering judgment, may serve as Engineer of Record, and plays a key role in developing innovative and practical solutions for complex building systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering design for building systems.
  • Proven experience leading engineering projects and coordinating multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and related building systems.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable building, mechanical, energy, and accessibility codes.
  • Experience serving as Engineer of Record preferred.
  • Demonstrated client-facing and project leadership experience.

Responsibilities

Technical Engineering Leadership

  1. Lead the design and engineering of HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical building systems.
  2. Perform and oversee engineering calculations, load analyses, equipment selections, and system evaluations.
  3. Develop practical and cost-effective engineering solutions that align with project objectives.
  4. Exercise independent engineering judgment with minimal supervision.
  5. Interpret and apply applicable codes, standards, regulations, and company design practices.
  6. Review, validate, and approve technical designs, specifications, reports, and construction documents.
  7. Serve as Engineer of Record when assigned.

Project Execution & Delivery

  1. Collaborate with Project Managers and project teams to establish project scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
  2. Develop discipline-specific work plans and estimate engineering hours required to complete project assignments.
  3. Monitor project progress and proactively address technical, schedule, and coordination challenges.
  4. Coordinate with internal project teams and external consultants to ensure successful project execution.
  5. Participate in design reviews and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
  6. Support construction administration activities, including submittal reviews, RFIs, site observations, and field issue resolution.
  7. Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards.

Client & Business Relationships

  1. Serve as a primary client contact for mechanical engineering-related matters.
  2. Present design concepts and engineering solutions to clients, owners, and project stakeholders.
  3. Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsive service and technical expertise.
  4. Support proposal development, project interviews, and business development initiatives as requested.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  1. Conduct quality control reviews of engineering calculations, designs, specifications, and drawings.
  2. Ensure compliance with applicable codes, industry standards, company procedures, and client requirements.
  3. Coordinate interdisciplinary reviews to ensure constructability, system compatibility, and design consistency.
  4. Maintain awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies, and code updates impacting project delivery.

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  1. Provide leadership, direction, and technical guidance to Engineers, EITs, and Designers.
  2. Assign project tasks and monitor team performance to ensure project objectives are achieved.
  3. Mentor and develop junior staff through coaching, training, and technical support.
  4. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  5. Promote professional integrity and represent the best interests of both the client and the company.

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of quality and accuracy.
  2. Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.
  3. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Technical

  • Advanced knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and building mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in Revit and BIM coordination workflows.
  • Experience with engineering analysis, modeling, and load calculation software.
  • Strong understanding of sustainable and energy-efficient building system design.
  • Expertise in equipment selection, system sizing, and construction document preparation.
  • Working knowledge of construction administration processes.

  • Ability to lead technical teams and multidisciplinary project efforts.
  • Strong mentoring and employee development capabilities.
