Summary

The Licensed Mechanical Project Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, coordination, and documentation of mechanical building systems for commercial, retail, industrial, institutional, multifamily, and mixed-use projects. This role applies advanced engineering knowledge and independent judgment to develop practical, code-compliant solutions while collaborating with project managers, architects, engineers, and designers throughout all phases of project delivery.

The Licensed Mechanical Project Engineer performs engineering calculations, prepares construction documents, coordinates with interdisciplinary teams, and supports project delivery goals related to quality, schedule, and budget. This position may provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers while serving as a technical resource on assigned projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of mechanical engineering experience in the design of building systems.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and related building systems.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable building, mechanical, energy, and accessibility codes.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary architecture and engineering environments preferred.
  • Proficiency in Revit and industry-standard engineering analysis software.

Essential Responsibilities

Technical Design & Engineering

  1. Perform engineering calculations, analysis, and system design for HVAC, plumbing, and related building systems.
  2. Design systems in accordance with applicable codes, standards, client requirements, and company procedures.
  3. Apply engineering judgment to develop practical, efficient, and cost-effective design solutions.
  4. Independently resolve technical challenges and design conflicts on assigned projects.
  5. Prepare and coordinate plans, specifications, reports, and construction documents.
  6. Select and specify equipment, materials, and system components appropriate for project requirements.
  7. Review shop drawings, submittals, and technical documentation as required.

Project Coordination

  1. Collaborate with Project Managers and project teams to understand project scope, schedule, budget, and design requirements.
  2. Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers, fire protection engineers, and other project stakeholders.
  3. Participate in design meetings, project reviews, and interdisciplinary coordination efforts.
  4. Assist in developing project schedules and estimating discipline-specific effort required for project completion.
  5. Support construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and performing site observations.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  1. Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, industry standards, and company quality requirements.
  2. Participate in internal quality control reviews of engineering documents.
  3. Coordinate with project teams to identify and resolve constructability and system coordination issues.
  4. Perform final technical reviews of assigned work products prior to project issuance.

Client & Team Support

  1. Communicate directly with clients, contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders regarding project-related engineering matters.
  2. Present design concepts and technical recommendations in a clear and professional manner.
  3. Provide technical guidance and support to Designers, EITs, and junior engineers.
  4. Assist in mentoring junior staff and promoting engineering best practices.
  5. Demonstrate professionalism and maintain focus on the best interests of both the client and the company.

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Manage multiple project assignments simultaneously while maintaining schedule commitments and quality standards.
  2. Stay current with changes in building codes, engineering technologies, and industry trends.
  3. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering department.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Experience with load calculations, engineering analysis, and modeling software.

  • Knowledge of construction administration processes and procedures.
  • Expertise in equipment selection and system sizing.
