Job Description
We are seeking a Laser Safety Specialist for Global EHS to join our team in an onsite capacity. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in laser and radiation safety programs, including hands-on LSO responsibilities, compliance auditing, and optical safety standards and a proven ability to assess hazards, implement controls, perform exposure calculations and measurements, and drive corrective actions across research and product environments.
Responsibilities:
- Audit laboratories for radiation and laser safety compliance.
- Analyze safety hazards and help define requirements for hardware with lasers, LEDs, and X-ray sources.
- Interpret and implement FLPPS, ANSI Z136.1, IEC 60825-1, and IEC 62471 standards.
- Create, review, and approve SOPs related to laser and optical hazards.
- Review and approve work performed by external laser service technicians.
- Identify and develop corrective actions and communicate with stakeholders.
- Conduct power, spectral, and temporal measurements for laser and LED sources.
- Implement CDPH requirements in California for X-ray generators and perform X-ray leakage surveys.
- Test to simulate faults and validate optical safety and design controls.
- Partner with research and product teams to establish compliant procedures.
- Support EHS programs such as LOTO, lab safety, chemical safety, electrical safety, and machine guarding.
- Travel to labs in Sunnyvale, Burlingame, and Fremont. Additional travel to Redmond, WA as needed.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Physics, Optical Sciences or Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or a related field. Direct experience as an LSO or RSO may substitute for a degree.
- At least 5 years of experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
- Proficiency with ANSI Z136.1 and application of laser safety calculations (e.g., MPE, NOHD, NHZ).
- Experience in safety investigations during development or failure analysis activities.
- Familiarity with lasers, LEDs, and X-ray generating devices and related controls.
- Background in technical or engineering roles focused on field testing, failure analysis, or reliability.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities with sound judgment.
- Strong communication, report writing, and presentation skills.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience as an LSO and/or RSO in hardware research or production environments.
- Knowledge of FDA/CDRH FLPPS, IEC 60825-1, and IEC 62471-1 requirements.
- BLS Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO).
- Ability to influence cross-functional teams through clear analysis and recommendations.
