Note: Python is retained as a mandatory skill based on the supplied requirement and is expected to support scripting, investigation, and automation. Go remains the primary engineering language for this role.
Role mission: Own the engineering path for complex third-party package upgrades, from assessment and version change through dependency remediation, build and existing-test stabilization, pre-submit validation, change submission, and migration reporting.
Role Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Go Software Engineer to deliver complex third-party open-source software (OSS) package upgrades within a large-scale mono repo environment. The engineer will assess package and dependency impacts, execute version upgrades, remediate compatibility issues, stabilize builds and existing tests, complete applicable pre-submit validation, submit review-ready changes, and maintain clear migration records.
Scope emphasis: The role focuses on diagnosing, fixing, and executing existing tests affected by package upgrades. Creation of new unit or integration test suites is not required.
Key Responsibilities:
Package Assessment and Upgrade Planning
- Assess assigned packages, dependency trees, API-change exposure, build impact, and upgrade friction before execution.
- Identify compatibility risks, upgrade constraints, and required remediation within the approved scope.
Dependency Management and Remediation
- Upgrade Go modules and third-party package versions.
- Separate version bumps from local patches where required.
- Reapply, update, or safely retire existing patches and document their disposition.
API Migration and Code Changes
- Resolve breaking API changes introduced by upgraded libraries.
- Update directly affected downstream callers within the approved scope.
- Apply idiomatic Go refactoring practices while maintaining functional compatibility.
Build, Test, and Pre-submit Stabilization
- Diagnose and remediate Go and Bazel build failures attributable to the upgrade.
- Fix existing test failures and applicable CI or presubmit failures caused by the package change.
- Isolate compiler, linker, build, test, and runtime issues introduced by dependency upgrades.
Source Synchronization and Integration
- Maintain Copybara configurations.
- Troubleshoot source-synchronization and integration issues associated with package changes.
- Support clean propagation of approved changes across relevant environments.
Change Management and Documentation
- Submit review-ready change lists with clear technical rationale, validation evidence, patch status, and traceable migration records.
- Document and escalate material package deviations, external blockers, and cross-product dependency impacts with actionable evidence.
- Maintain disciplined handoffs and reliable progress reporting against assigned priorities.
Automation and Engineering Efficiency
- Use approved internal tooling and reusable automation to accelerate analysis, failure triage, validation, and evidence capture.
- Contribute reusable learnings, upgrade playbooks, and automation patterns within controlled enterprise environments.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on development and debugging in Go.
- Strong command of Go modules, semantic versioning, transitive dependency resolution, package compatibility,
- and idiomatic API refactoring.
- Practical experience with Bazel, go build, go test, CI/presubmit pipelines, and large or monorepo-based build
- environments.
- Demonstrated ability to isolate and remediate compiler, linker, build, test, and runtime failures introduced by
- dependency upgrades.
- Proficiency with Git-based change management, code review, merge-conflict resolution, and local patch lifecycle
- management.
- Strong Linux and scripting skills for investigation, repeatable validation, and engineering automation.
- Clear written and verbal communication, disciplined documentation, and effective collaboration with reviewers and
- language subject-matter experts.
