Senior Business Data Requirements Consultant
Phoenix, AZ

Purpose of the role
Support the Financial Crimes Data Strategy function by establishing and executing a consistent business data requirements process across regulatory, transformation, product, and Financial Crimes initiatives. The consultant will translate business use cases and risk outcomes into clear, testable data requirements and help bridge Business, Product, Data, Technology, and Testing.
Key responsibilities
• Lead elicitation and documentation of business data requirements across Financial Crimes initiatives.
• Translate business capabilities, use cases, regulatory/risk needs, and business decisions into specific data requirements.
• Define required data attributes, business definitions, timing/frequency, granularity, history, and conditions of satisfaction.
• Partner with business SMEs to understand what information is required and why.
• Work with Data Architecture, Product, and Technology to identify potential sources and determine whether existing data can be reused.
• Capture data-quality and fit-for-purpose requirements as part of the requirement—not after delivery.
• Define clear data acceptance criteria that Testing can validate against.
• Trace requirements from business need through data sourcing, delivery, testing, and acceptance.
• Identify duplicate, conflicting, or overlapping data requirements across initiatives.
• Maintain requirements traceability, open questions, assumptions, dependencies, and decisions.
• Support creation of a standardized data-requirements intake and documentation process.
• Review existing requirements and current practices to identify gaps and opportunities for standardization.
• Partner closely with the Business Data Architect so individual requirements align to the broader capability and data strategy.
• Escalate unresolved questions around ownership, authoritative source, criticality, prioritization, or business meaning rather than making those decisions independently.
Required experience
I would make these fairly strong requirements:
• 8–12+ years of experience in business analysis, data requirements, data management, data products, or related data disciplines.
• Demonstrated experience translating business requirements into detailed data requirements.
• Strong understanding of data concepts including:
o business definitions;
o source-to-target mapping;
o data lineage;
o data quality;
o reference/master data;
o critical data;
o metadata;
o historical/time-based requirements.
• Experience working across Business, Product, Technology/Data Engineering, Architecture, and Testing.
• Ability to distinguish business requirements, business data requirements, technical requirements, and test requirements.
• Strong requirements-management and traceability skills.
• Experience with Jira or similar demand/requirements-management tools.
• Strong facilitation skills — able to work with SMEs and ask the questions necessary to uncover the actual business/data need.
• Strong written communication and documentation skills.
Strongly preferred
• Financial services / regulated-industry experience.
• Financial Crimes, AML, KYC, Sanctions, Transaction Monitoring, Investigations, Fraud, Risk, or Compliance experience.
• Experience with enterprise data governance or critical-data programs.
• Experience supporting major data/platform transformation programs.
• Experience establishing a data-requirements process where one did not previously exist.
• Experience with data products or domain-oriented data models.
