A certification badge might help your resume pass an automated filter, but engineering leaders want tangible proof of your cloud security, data architecture and production deployment bona fides.
The explosion of generative AI has sparked a gold rush in technical credentials. Cloud providers, online learning hubs and industry associations are rolling out specialized artificial intelligence certifications at a breakneck pace, all promising to make candidates more employable. With countless candidates sporting digital badges for basic skills, the gap between holding a certificate and actually shipping products has never been larger.
To find out which certifications carry weight, how traditional infrastructure skills fit into the equation, and why real-world portfolios remain king, we spoke with five tech founders, hiring executives and engineering leaders.
Cloud-Native Over Vendor-Neutral
When enterprises build generative AI solutions, they don't deploy them in academia. They build them directly inside existing enterprise cloud environments, making platform-specific expertise far more valuable than theoretical, vendor-neutral credentials.
"As an agency that places developers and custom builds products for clients, we see this from both a hiring and a client demand perspective," explains Darryl Stevens, founder of the web design firm Digitech and algorithmic investment trading firm Chrysos Wealth. "AWS is still the primary and preferred certification, followed by Azure. It is absolutely a requirement that any mid-level or senior engineer working on cloud has the appropriate platform certification."
Don Gregori, author and COO of the software development firm First Factory, agrees that vendor-neutral credentials fail to validate the enterprise complexities of modern AI workloads. "In response to the fast-paced adoption of generative AI, hiring managers have started to favor cloud-specific certifications over neutral ones," Gregori says. "Since AI is inherently based upon cloud data architecture, there is little value added in a certification like AWS Certified Machine Learning - Specialty or Microsoft's Azure AI Engineer Associate unless you understand how to integrate solutions into a large-scale enterprise environment. Vendor-neutral certifications may give you a solid foundation in theoretical aspects, but actual enterprise implementation relies heavily upon native IAM roles, data governance and VPC security—which neutral certs will never validate."
Data from major job markets confirms this shift away from generalized credentials toward specialized platform skills.
"Our company keeps track of more than 600 million job postings, giving us access to up-to-date hiring data," notes Lacey Kaelani-Dahan, co-founder of job search engine Metaintro. "At present, the certifications in high demand include vendor-specific platforms like AWS and Azure, as well as increasingly Salesforce, rather than the bootcamp qualifications that were lucrative a few years ago. Standalone full-stack and JavaScript bootcamp numbers are going down, while AI and machine learning certifications are growing more popular."
Why Traditional Infrastructure and Security Still Win
While generative AI dominates executive headlines, tech leaders emphasize that legacy certifications in infrastructure, security and networking remain the foundational bedrock of technical hiring.
"Legacy technology certifications continue to have value in the marketplace, but they have become a baseline requirement," Gregori points out. "Having knowledge of the latest advancements in AI engineering provides no additional value unless you also have a solid foundation in systems architecture, API management and CI/CD pipelines. Many companies view production-ready AI applications as significant security exposures, placing high value on traditional credentials like AWS Solutions Architect Professional or CISSP because AI theory alone cannot build a scalable product."
Kaelani-Dahan reinforces that infrastructure qualifications cannot simply be swapped out for newer AI badges. "Traditional infrastructure and security certifications continue being valuable because most enterprise AI systems are cloud-based and subjected to attacks like any other technology," Kaelani-Dahan says. "These systems qualifications can hardly be replaced by AI credentials; rather, AI credentials complement them."
For practical software delivery, platform-specific implementation skills outweigh theoretical certificates every time.
"AI credentials are only valid if they come with actual deployment experience," says Tyler Desjardins, founder of digital solutions agency Pivot Creative Media. "We value developers who have already implemented AI features into client environments over those who simply hold certifications. Last year, we had a developer with an impressive AI background but no familiarity with our client stack who spent three weeks just studying hooks and filters before writing project code. Cert-only candidates run the risk of struggling through onboarding, whereas engineers with practical deployment skills earn higher pay and faster promotions."
Separating Rigor from Fluff
Not all AI certifications are created equal. Tech leaders draw a sharp line between credentials earned through hands-on, timed lab environments and superficial badges awarded for passing multiple-choice quizzes.
"Honestly speaking, the majority of AI certifications that exist today are nothing but tests of memorization," warns Yad Senapathy, Founder and CEO of the Project Management Training Institute (PMTI) and contributor to the PMBOK® Guide. "If a course does not involve practical projects, you are only learning how to memorize study guides. We see this across clients in defense, healthcare and IT—thousands of engineers pass tests but still need help doing practical work, which wastes time and money."
Senapathy recommends evaluating programs by their practical rigor and instructional methods. "Programs that boast a first-time pass rate close to 100 percent do not set a real standard," Senapathy adds. "In my conversations with hiring managers over the last two years, there has been an increasing request for portfolios alongside certifications. While a certification is important to get you an interview, the portfolio is the document that gets you the offer."
Gregori argues that the testing format itself determines whether a credential has genuine market validity.
"High-value certifications are distinguished by how the candidate was tested—such as a proctored lab environment where they write code and test models in real time, versus a theoretical multiple-choice test," Gregori explains. "Recruiters and leaders dismiss certs covering surface-level prompt engineering and basic ethics. To be high-value, the candidate must create code, configure parameters, process data, manage memory and programmatically implement security guardrails under timed sandbox constraints. Without those challenges, the certification is viewed as a novelty."
Stevens notes that newer role-specific certifications are attempting to bridge this gap. "We're seeing that credentials like the Claude Architect certification from Anthropic carry weight because they require hands-on experience to answer the questions," Stevens says. "However, as rapidly as the technology evolves, recency and ongoing maintenance of certifications will matter most."
Why Portfolios Still Rule
Across engineering departments, there is broad consensus on the precise role credentials play: they serve as top-of-funnel screening mechanisms, but they do not close the deal.
"Certifications are very valuable when trying to get past the first round of automated filters from HR departments," Gregori notes. "However, an active GitHub repository with a production-grade application showing strategic error handling is far better proof of ability. Standardized exams cannot measure a developer's ability to debug complex Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) or multi-agent autonomous workflows. To prove proficiency, an engineer must demonstrate they can optimize vector chunk size, manage data synchronization latency, and prevent infinite loops in agent routing."
Kaelani-Dahan sees the same dynamic play out across job platforms. "For senior engineers, a certification proves familiarity with a platform, but it is not evidence of hands-on implementation of RAG pipelines or agentic workflows," she explains. "Hiring managers use certifications for candidate filtering, but rely on portfolios to make final decisions. Candidates who demonstrate concrete skills like prompt engineering and AI output review see immediate advantages in recruiter visibility."
Desjardins shares a cautionary tale about hiring solely based on credential badges.
"A few months ago, we hired a developer with several AI credentials who seemed amazing on paper," Desjardins recalls. "When asked for specific examples of deploying a RAG system, he gave textbook answers. He didn't understand how to connect embeddings to a database or manage production latency, and spent significant time debugging failed client implementations. Low-value certs teach a framework; portfolio projects prove you can solve messy real-world problems. We now require all candidates to walk through a shipped project rather than show copies of certifications."
Stevens adds that credentials primarily validate high-level systems design. "Certifications validate a senior engineer's capability as an architect designing data and agent management. While production development skills are ultimately more valuable, certification remains key for earning trust in architecture design and implementation plans."
The Compensation Equation
Despite the skepticism around certifications, technologists who successfully pair recognized cloud credentials with demonstrated AI implementation are seeing measurable financial rewards.
"Across the technology space, the ROI and salary increases for technologists holding advanced AI-related credentials are well documented," Gregori says. "Market placement data and compensation studies consistently show a 20 to 35 percent salary increase for software engineers with certified cloud-based AI architecture credentials over those with traditional full-stack skills. Employing credentialed engineers shortens the R&D cycle by anticipating pipeline bottlenecks and integration issues before they occur."
Stevens observes that efficiency gains are reshaping delivery timelines and engineering value. "We are seeing projects delivered somewhere between 35 and 67 percent more efficiently as a result of building with AI tools," Stevens notes. "While senior engineers with certifications alone are not necessarily commanding higher pay, senior engineers who have been actively working with AI for 12 to 18 months are commanding 15 to 30 percent salary premiums."
Certifications are not a golden ticket to a high-paying AI role, but they are far from useless. In a crowded job market, platform-specific credentials from AWS, Azure and Anthropic signal that your resume can move past automated filters and into human hands.
However, once you are in the interview room, the piece of paper stops mattering. Tech leaders want to see clean repositories, working RAG pipelines, solid security policies and candidates who can talk through the messy realities of debugging production models under real-world constraints. Earn the credential to validate your knowledge but build the portfolio to win the job.
