Which programming languages do software engineers love the most?

According to Hired’s 2022 State of Software Engineers report, Python topped the list, followed by JavaScript, Java, TypeScript, and C#. What are the reasons behind this love? Hired surveyed software engineers about that, too:

Hired analyzed data from 366,000 “interactions” between software engineers and companies on its online marketplace, in addition to surveys with more than 2,000 software-engineering candidates.

It’s no surprise that Python would claim the top spot. For starters, it’s regularly utilized by millions of developers all over the world, according to SlashData, which estimated the Python community at 11.3 million users. It’s also updated frequently, with all the tweaks and additions that developers need to do their jobs. If you’re interested in learning the language, swing by Python.org for its handy beginner’s guide. Visual learners should also review Microsoft’s video series, “Python for Beginners,” features dozens of short lessons (most under five minutes in length; none longer than 13 minutes) in the various aspects of Python.

JavaScript is also immensely popular among software developers and engineers in a variety of industries. Those interested in JavaScript should head over to JavaScript.info, which offers an extensive walkthrough of fundamentals, including the ever-popular “Hello, world!” You should also consider visiting hackr.io, which lists a variety of courses and tutorials for various languages.

Mastering skills and other software-engineering skills can prove quite lucrative. According to Emsi Burning Glass, which collects and analyzes millions of job postings from across the country, the median salary for a software engineer is $98,783 per year. Mastering in-demand skill-sets such as the cloud will make that go even higher.
