Hewlett-Packard is using this week’s VMworld conference to announce new HP Converged Cloud support for VMware’s vCloud Suite 5.1. The HP Converged Cloud unites HP Converged Infrastructure, HP Converged Management and Security, Converged Information and hardened OpenStack technology into a common platform. IT administrators and CIOs can use it to deploy and manage cloud infrastructure. VMware’s vCloud Suite gives companies the tools to build out an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud. It comes in three flavors: vCloud Suite Standard, which allows IT administrators to deliver services such as networking and security within virtual datacenters; vCloud Suite Advanced, with more cloud-infrastructure and operations management features; and vCloud Suite Enterprise, with still more features such as on-demand provisioning of multi-tier applications. The interaction between HP Converged Cloud and vCloud Suite is multifaceted. For example, IT pros can use HP Cloud Protection Program and Consulting Services to determine which HP and VMware security capabilities will best serve different aspects of their infrastructure’s security needs. HP Data Protector integrates with VMware vCloud Director to provide backup and recovery (along with support for federated de-duplication for the enterprise); in theory, that curbs the risk of data loss from applications for vCloud users. Via these expanded offerings, vCloud can be integrated with HP CloudSystem, a portfolio of architecture for building private, public and hybrid cloud environments. Features include virtual-machine importing, which allows IT pros to import virtual machines into the HP CloudSystem with a minimum of downtime and reconfiguration, and HP Cloud Maps for VMware, a package of optimized HP CloudSystem templates. “With VMware vCloud Suite 5.1, organizations will have reliable, flexible cloud solutions that enhance business agility while also addressing individual enterprise needs quickly and efficiently,” Raghu Raghuram, executive vice president of Cloud Infrastructure and Management for VMware, wrote in an Aug. 28 statement. “VMware vCloud Suite 5.1 and HP Converged Cloud solutions will enable our joint customers to accelerate their journey to the cloud, giving enterprises a proven, integrated solution that provides a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market.” VMware has been using its VMworld conference this week to make some rather high-profile announcements, including how it plans to eliminate its vRAM program in favor of a simpler pricing model based on physical processor cores.   Image: Hewlett-Packard
