Originally scheduled for release in the second half of 2011, Apple's iPad 3 looks like it will be delayed until 2012. The main cause is the 9.7-inch Retina Display panel, which is mainly produced by Sharp in Japan at a high price. Other producers, like Samsung or LG, could not reach Sharp's yield rate. According to digitimes, Apple planned to launch iPad 3 with a supply volume of 1.5 to 2 million units in the third quarter and 5-6 million in the fourth. Apple partners indicate thi isn't now possible. The problem panel producers are confronting is the screen's high resolution. It requires a much larger backlight source. With only a single edge light bar, this is difficult to achieve. We all know how beautiful the iPhone 4's display is, so Apple could have shot itself in the foot had the iPad 3 been released without the retina issue resolved. Meanwhile, the iPhone rumors continue to abound. The latest claim a new iPhone will be announced in late September or early October. Source: DigiTimes, BGR
