Financial services company USAA plans to add 680 jobs at an IT hub in Plano, Texas, as part of its $31 million expansion. The jobs are expected to be phased in through 2018. USAA LogoThe move comes just six months after the company announced plans to hire 1,000 new workers in Phoenix, Ariz., and as many as 2,500 new workers in its San Antonio, Texas, headquarters. A portion of the positions in Phoenix and San Antonio will also be in IT. USAA provides insurance, banking, investment and retirement products and services to veterans and military families. Mike Pansini, Vice President of Information Technology, told the Dallas Business Journal that the company focuses on its online presence rather than brick-and-mortar offices, so “essentially, IT is the engine that makes the company run." USAA customers are highly mobile, and Pansini noted: "We can’t make them bank on our time; they do business on their time with us." The new jobs in Plano will be in mobile application development, IT security and Big Data. These IT workers will be tinkering with new concepts that could revolutionize the banking industry, Pansini told the Dallas Business Journal. USAA expects its Plano office to be ready by mid-January and about 30 people will be brought in by the end of the year to the existing Dallas location. USAA employs 16,400 workers in San Antonio, 3,000 in Phoenix and has a 200-employee financial-advisory operation in Dallas. It’s been a popular employer for IT staff. It ranked No. 2 on Computerworld’s 100 Best Places to Work in IT list this year and held the top spot for the three previous years. The magazine cited employees’ sense of purpose and pride from helping military families, plus the generous benefits and workplace amenities for the company's high rankings. Computerworld rated the company highly for its training opportunities as well.
