Microsoft warned users
yesterday that phishing attempts are going on via Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
. The company didn't say very much. Here's the post from the Xbox support page:
Users may experience difficulties with the following services:
We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.
- Users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2.
That's the whole statement, by the way. Infinity Ward, the game's developer, is testing a patch
to close down the phishers. Some gamers say phishing through Modern Warfare's
nothing new, and it's not clear
whether Microsoft saw an increase in scam attempts or has just become hypersensitive in light of Sony PlayStation Network's ongoing problems
. Pretty much every blog I've read is warning people to keep personal information close to the vest. Matt Clark
on MTV Multiplayer puts it best:
If you're crazy enough to give out your personal information to random people in a "Modern Warfare 2" match, you may want to reconsider using the internet at all.
