Server & Virtualization Architecture- Designing VMware/Hyper-V clusters for HA and DRS, resource pool design, vMotion/storage migration strategies.
- Linux at an architect level - AD forest/domain design, trust relationships, GPO strategy, DNS/DHCP redundancy.
- Capacity and lifecycle planning for hardware refresh cycles,
Storage Architecture- SAN design (Fibre Channel zoning, multipathing), storage tiering, performance troubleshooting (IOPS, latency bottlenecks).
- Backup architecture - not just running Veeam/Commvault, or Rubrik but designing RPO/RTO-driven strategies, 3-2-1 backup rules, offsite/air-gapped copies.
- Disaster recovery: designing and testing actual failover between sites, not just documenting theoretical plans.
Resilience & Continuity- Designing for no single point of failure across power, network, compute, storage.
- Running real DR tests (not tabletop-only) and owning the RTO/RPO conversation with the business.
Security posture ownership- Network segmentation, internal firewalling, privileged access management.
- Patch and vulnerability management programs at scale.
- Physical security controls for on-prem gear.
Legacy + Modern Integration- Keeping aging hardware/software running safely while planning eventual replacement.
- Bridging on-prem systems with SaaS or hybrid cloud pieces (email, identity, backup-to-cloud).
