This position is located in the Cumberland County Project Development Unit. Position will serve as the Division 6 Project Development Engineer. Responsibilities include management and supervision of Division wide units including Project Management, Design Engineering Unit, Planning Engineer, Bridge Program, Environmental, and Contract Engineer. Position will perform advanced engineering calculations, provide engineering technical assistance, assist in the development and implementation of various Division programs. Selected candidate will respond to inquiries from the public, DOT management, news media, etc., regarding DOT policies and procedures, division projects, plans and proposed work.
The selected applicant for this position must promote safe work environment. This position requires the ability to maintain multiple projects and complete difficult assignments within specified time requirements. Communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, business associates and the general public. Direct the work of other engineers, apply engineering principles to difficult or complex engineering problems, and make sound recommendations and decisions. Employee must be able to manage and direct annual budget for the reporting units. Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Registration as a professional Engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management PreferencesSalary Grade and Salary Range: NC25
$89,596 - $201,593Management prefers applicants with the following:- Knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts, practices and theories used in project development and experience planning, developing, designing, scheduling, tracking and completing projects, independently or with minimal supervision.
- Experience interpreting and communicating verbally and in writing details of plans, project documents, policies and procedures to convey information to consultants, department personnel and others.
- Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple or complex project development based on reviewing plans for completeness, compliance with engineering principles, standards and design needs.
- Experience supervising, motivating, counseling, and training other engineers and technicians.
- Experience leading and maintaining positive working relationships with environmental agencies, public officials, consultants, contractors and staff, in order to find acceptable solutions to infrastructure project problems.

Bachelor's degree in engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of seven years progressive engineering experience including four years of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications:May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
