ANTICIPATED VACANCY 8/1/2026
This posting is for an Engineer II position in the Division 5 Project Development unit. The position will serve as the Senior Assistant to the DDC Engineer in the production of roadway design plans and estimates, creating construction documents, design and review erosion control, hydraulics, pavement marking and roadway plans from inception through final construction in accordance with NCDOT policy manuals, standards and specifications. This position requires the ability to review and critique work completed by internal team members or Private Engineering Firms (PEFs) as part of roadway project development. Duties include the effective use of engineering software, including but not limited to MicroStation, GEOPAK, and OpenRoads Designer. This position will manage and coordinate all aspects of project development including planning and design while aiming to keep projects within scope, schedule, and budget. Additional responsibilities include developing and reviewing estimates for roadway projects - including construction and Right-of-Way (ROW) costs - based on recent NCDOT bid pricing. The engineer must be capable of setting and maintaining project schedules, as well as identifying and addressing changes as they arise. The engineer will provide training to team members in design methods, software applications, cost estimating, and other related duties.
Additional Expectations:
Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18 / $63,927 - $111,871
Management prefers applicants with the following:- Experience in the oversite of subordinate Engineers and Technicians
- Experience in the use of professional engineering principles and practices to troubleshoot and solve roadway design challenges
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and review moderately complex engineering and technical plans and/or data for completeness, compatibility, compliance with engineering principles, standards, codes and design needs.
- Experience with interpreting and communicating verbally and in writing details of plans, project documents, policies, and procedures to convey information to consultants, department personnel, and others.
- Experience in the use of software such as Microsoft Office/ Outlook, CADD (ORD), SharePoint, and use of GIS software.

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification: May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
