Position: Senior AWS Application Modernization Engineer
Client Location: Washington D.C.
Work Location: Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time Employment (FTE)
Duration: Long term
Active DoD Secret clearance (OR) must be eligible to obtain a Secret clearance.
Client Manager’s Note:
This position requires an AWS Engineer who can work at both the application and AWS cloud layers. Candidates with only AWS infrastructure administration experience or only traditional application development experience may not possess the combination of skills needed for this role.
Position Summary:
- We are seeking an experienced Senior AWS Application Modernization Engineer to support the migration, refactoring, and modernization of enterprise applications from on-premises environments to Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- The ideal candidate will possess a strong application development background combined with hands-on AWS cloud engineering experience. This role requires the ability to assess existing application architectures, understand legacy application code and dependencies, implement necessary code changes, and modernize applications to leverage AWS cloud services.
- Will work across application development, infrastructure, databases, networking, and cybersecurity teams to migrate and modernize enterprise applications while ensuring security, scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Hands-on technical skills requiring both software engineering and AWS cloud expertise, rather than a traditional infrastructure-only cloud engineering role.
Key Responsibilities:
Application Migration & Modernization:
- Assess existing on-premises applications, architectures, technology stacks, dependencies, and integrations to determine appropriate AWS migration strategies.
- Lead and support migration activities involving rehosting (lift-and-shift), re-platforming, and application refactoring.
- Refactor existing application code and components to improve cloud compatibility, scalability, security, maintainability, and performance.
- Modernize legacy applications to leverage AWS-managed services, containerization, microservices, and serverless technologies where appropriate.
- Identify and resolve application compatibility issues during migration from on-premises infrastructure to AWS.
- Evaluate application dependencies, configurations, and integrations to minimize migration risks.
- Support application testing, migration cutover, validation, and post-migration stabilization.
- Collaborate with development, infrastructure, database, networking, and cybersecurity teams to ensure successful application migrations.
Application Development & Refactoring:
- Analyze, troubleshoot, maintain, and modify existing enterprise application source code to support cloud migration and modernization.
- Refactor application components, backend services, APIs, and integrations for compatibility with AWS environments.
- Develop or modify application functionality as necessary to support modernized architectures.
- Work with existing enterprise applications developed using technologies such as Java, .NET/C#, Python, JavaScript, or equivalent languages and frameworks.
- Develop, enhance, and integrate REST APIs and backend services.
- Support application authentication, authorization, session management, configuration management, and centralized logging.
- Identify opportunities to improve application performance, reliability, and maintainability through code optimization and architectural improvements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve application-level issues involving existing source code, libraries, dependencies, and integrations.
AWS Cloud Engineering:
- Deploy, configure, and support applications using AWS services such as EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, API Gateway, ECS, Elastic Load Balancing, IAM, VPC, and CloudWatch.
- Design and implement secure, scalable, and highly available cloud application architectures.
- Support migration and modernization of Windows- and Linux-based enterprise applications to AWS.
- Configure and troubleshoot cloud application connectivity, DNS, load balancers, security groups, networking, and TLS certificates.
- Support hybrid connectivity between AWS-hosted applications and remaining on-premises systems.
- Implement application monitoring, centralized logging, performance optimization, and operational improvements.
- Evaluate opportunities to transition applications from traditional server-based environments to AWS-managed, containerized, or serverless architectures.
- Support infrastructure automation and repeatable application deployments.
Database & Enterprise Integration:
- Analyze existing application database connections, queries, stored procedures, and data access components.
- Support migration and integration of enterprise databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, DB2, or equivalent platforms.
- Modify and refactor database connection configurations and application data access logic as necessary.
- Troubleshoot database connectivity, latency, transaction processing, and application performance issues.
- Support integrations between AWS-hosted applications, legacy enterprise systems, and third-party services.
- Coordinate database migration, data validation, and integration activities with database engineering teams.
DevSecOps & Automation:
- Develop and maintain automated build, testing, and deployment pipelines using tools such as GitLab, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or AWS CodePipeline.
- Support Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or similar technologies.
- Containerize applications using Docker and support deployments through AWS container services where appropriate.
- Automate application configurations, deployment processes, and operational activities.
- Implement secure coding practices, dependency management, vulnerability remediation, and application configuration hardening.
- Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to address security findings and ensure compliance with applicable security requirements.
- Support integration of automated code scanning, security testing, and quality checks into development pipelines.
Troubleshooting & Production Support:
- Diagnose and resolve complex application issues involving source code, APIs, databases, application servers, operating systems, and AWS infrastructure.
- Investigate application errors, performance degradation, connectivity issues, and integration failures during and after migration.
- Analyze application logs, metrics, and system behavior to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Support functional testing, integration testing, performance testing, and deployment validation.
- Document application architectures, dependencies, modernization changes, deployment procedures, and troubleshooting processes.
- Provide technical support during migration cutovers and post-migration stabilization activities.
Required Qualifications:
- 12+ years of hands-on experience in software development, application engineering, application migration, or application modernization.
- Strong understanding of enterprise application architectures, backend services, APIs, databases, and system integrations.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing, troubleshooting, modifying, and refactoring existing application source code.
- Proficiency in at least one enterprise programming language or application development framework, such as Java, .NET/C#, Python, or equivalent.
- Hands-on experience deploying, configuring, and supporting applications in AWS.
- Experience with core AWS services such as EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, Lambda, Elastic Load Balancing, and CloudWatch.
- Experience supporting application migrations, refactoring, re-platforming, or cloud modernization initiatives.
- Working knowledge of relational databases, SQL, and application database connectivity.
- Experience working with Windows- or Linux-based enterprise application environments.
- Understanding of REST APIs, application authentication, network connectivity, and TLS certificates.
- Experience with Git, scripting, debugging, and application deployment processes.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues across application code, infrastructure, databases, and network connectivity.
- Strong analytical, communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with cross-functional technical teams.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience migrating enterprise applications from on-premises data Centers to AWS.
- Experience refactoring legacy or monolithic applications into cloud-compatible or cloud-native architectures.
- Familiarity with web and application servers such as IIS, Apache, Nginx, or Tomcat.
- Experience with frontend technologies such as JavaScript, React, or Angular.
