Role:Senior Solutions Architect Cloud Infrastructure
Location:Washington DC (Remote)
Job Type:Contract
Job Summary
The Senior Solutions Architect Cloud Infrastructure will be responsible for defining and advancing the enterprise architecture for cloud infrastructure. This individual will provide hands-on architecture leadership across Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), cloud networking, cloud security, identity integration, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automation, observability, resiliency and infrastructure lifecycle management.
This architect will establish target-state architectures, reference standards, reusable patterns and strategic roadmaps that align cloud infrastructure investments with business priorities while improving delivery speed, consistency and operational efficiency and reducing risk.
The role requires someone who can work effectively through influence rather than direct authority. This individual must be able to communicate cloud infrastructure strategy, architecture decisions, target-state designs and roadmaps to senior leaders, architects, engineers, delivery teams and business stakeholders. They will be expected to build alignment through strong technical credibility, thought leadership and trusted relationships across the organization.
The architect will work extensively across cybersecurity, Identity and Access Management (IAM), networking, platform engineering and compliance teams to ensure security controls, policy requirements and Infrastructure-as-Code capabilities are incorporated into cloud architecture.
A significant part of the position involves promoting automated infrastructure delivery through CI/CD pipelines and ensuring cloud infrastructure architecture aligns with applicable security and regulatory requirements, including PCI DSS, NIST, ISO/IEC 27001, FRA regulations and other organizational compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Define the enterprise vision, target state and strategic roadmap for cloud infrastructure.
- Provide architecture leadership across IaaS, cloud networking, cloud security, IAM integration, Infrastructure as Code, automation, observability, resiliency and infrastructure lifecycle management.
- Establish and govern cloud infrastructure principles, standards, reference architectures and reusable patterns for designing, provisioning, securing, connecting, deploying, operating and maintaining infrastructure.
- Architect solutions across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
- Govern current-state, transitional-state and target-state cloud infrastructure architectures.
- Evaluate architectural tradeoffs, dependencies, technical debt, risks and cross-domain impacts across infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity, identity and Infrastructure as Code.
- Translate cybersecurity, identity, regulatory and organizational requirements into secure, resilient and implementable cloud infrastructure controls and architecture patterns.
- Ensure cloud infrastructure architecture appropriately addresses PCI DSS, NIST, ISO/IEC 27001, FRA and other applicable compliance requirements.
- Drive adoption and reuse of approved infrastructure patterns, modules, controls, processes and technologies.
- Work closely with the Cloud Platforms Architect to ensure underlying infrastructure and platform services integrate through clearly defined interfaces, shared controls and compatible delivery patterns.
- Promote consistent cloud infrastructure architecture and reusable engineering approaches across the organization.
- Provide hands-on technical guidance to architects, engineers and delivery teams.
- Develop reference implementations, Infrastructure-as-Code examples and technical design walkthroughs demonstrating how approved architecture should be implemented.
- Mentor and coach engineering teams so they can independently deliver consistent, compliant, scalable and supportable cloud solutions.
- Develop cloud infrastructure roadmaps and transition plans based on business value, risk, resiliency, security, compliance, technical debt and technology dependencies.
- Evaluate proposed cloud technologies, capabilities, sourcing options and investments against business strategy, target-state architecture, cost, risk, security, resiliency, compliance and long-term operational sustainability.
- Provide architecture governance and technical design oversight for secure, resilient, scalable, automated, observable and cost-effective cloud infrastructure solutions.
- Review technical designs, document architecture decisions and resolve complex cross-domain architecture issues.
- Translate complicated cloud infrastructure concepts, technical tradeoffs, security requirements and implementation impacts into clear, decision-ready recommendations for leadership.
- Serve as a senior cloud infrastructure architecture liaison between technology teams and business stakeholders.
Required Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data and Intelligence, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Approximately 13+ years of relevant experience when combined with the applicable educational background/equivalent experience.
- Experience delivering significant business value as an architect within large enterprises of approximately $500M+ scale.
- Experience establishing architectural vision and selecting technologies/platforms capable of supporting current needs and future enterprise growth.
- 9+ years of relevant technical and business experience, including approximately 23 years working within an Architecture Practice.
- Demonstrated experience influencing senior management, senior engineering leadership and key business stakeholders.
- Experience managing multiple architecture engagements simultaneously while driving planning, stakeholder participation and architectural conformance.
- Experience helping scale architecture teams, develop technical talent and guide portfolio transformation initiatives.
- Strong communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to operate successfully across a large, matrixed organization.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to balance technology decisions against business priorities.
- Ability to surface, prioritize and balance competing requirements across multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including using data to support architecture and technology decisions.
Preferred Experience
- Master's degree in Business or a related field.
- Travel and transportation industry experience or other relevant large-enterprise technology-domain experience.
- Experience with governance, risk, regulatory and compliance environments.
- Broad architecture knowledge spanning multiple domains, including:
- Business Architecture
- Application/Solution Architecture
- Technical/Infrastructure Architecture
- Information/Data Architecture
