Role:Cloud infrastructure Architecture
Location:Washington DC
Job Type:Contract
Position Overview
The Cloud Infrastructure Architect is responsible for translating business, security, operational, and regulatory requirements into actionable cloud infrastructure architecture and technology direction. This role defines enterprise cloud infrastructure vision and target-state architecture, evaluates technology options, makes strategic recommendations, and resolves complex cross-domain design challenges across infrastructure, networking, security, identity, automation, and infrastructure-as-code.
The Architect works closely with senior engineering teams and business stakeholders to establish scalable, secure, resilient, compliant, and cost-effective cloud infrastructure solutions. The role combines architecture governance and strategic leadership with hands-on technical guidance, including reference implementations, design walkthroughs, infrastructure-as-code examples, and technical coaching.
Key Responsibilities
- Define the enterprise vision, target state, and strategic roadmaps for cloud infrastructure, including Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), networking, security, identity integration, infrastructure as code (IaC), automation, observability, resilience, and infrastructure lifecycle management.
- Establish and govern cloud infrastructure principles, standards, reference architectures, reusable patterns, and engineering practices across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
- Govern current-state, transitional-state, and target-state cloud infrastructure architectures by evaluating technical tradeoffs, dependencies, risks, technical debt, and cross-domain impacts.
- Translate cybersecurity, identity, regulatory, and organizational requirements into secure and implementable cloud infrastructure controls and architecture patterns, including requirements associated with PCI DSS, NIST, ISO/IEC 27001, FRA regulations, and other applicable standards.
- Partner with the Cloud Platforms Architect to establish clear ownership boundaries, integration points, shared controls, and compatible delivery patterns between cloud infrastructure and platform-as-a-service capabilities.
- Drive adoption and reuse of approved cloud infrastructure patterns, modules, controls, processes, technologies, and automation frameworks across enterprise initiatives.
- Provide architecture governance and technical oversight for solutions that are secure, resilient, scalable, automated, observable, and cost-effective.
- Review architecture and technical designs, document architecture decisions, identify risks and dependencies, resolve complex technical issues, and guide engineering teams through implementation.
- Develop cloud infrastructure roadmaps and transition plans, prioritizing initiatives based on business value, security, risk, resilience, compliance, technical debt, operational sustainability, and dependencies.
- Guide cloud infrastructure investment decisions by evaluating proposed technologies, capabilities, sourcing options, and funding priorities against business strategy, target-state architecture, cost, risk, security, compliance, and operational requirements.
- Promote consistent architecture practices, reusable engineering approaches, portfolio alignment, and disciplined adoption of enterprise standards through technical leadership, thought leadership, and cross-functional influence.
- Mentor architects, engineers, and delivery teams through hands-on technical guidance, reference implementations, design reviews, infrastructure-as-code examples, architecture walkthroughs, and technical coaching.
- Build engineering capability and enable teams to independently deliver consistent, compliant, scalable, secure, and supportable cloud infrastructure solutions.
- Serve as a senior architecture liaison between Digital Technology, engineering, security, operations, and business stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts and architecture tradeoffs into clear, decision-ready recommendations.
- Influence senior leadership and key stakeholders by presenting architecture options, risks, dependencies, investment considerations, and recommended technology strategies.
- Manage multiple architecture engagements simultaneously while ensuring appropriate planning, stakeholder participation, architecture governance, and conformance to enterprise standards.
- Support portfolio transformation initiatives and contribute to the scaling and development of architecture capabilities and technical talent across the organization.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data & Intelligence, Engineering, or a related field, with 13+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
- 9+ years of relevant technical and business experience, including 23 years working within a formal architecture practice.
- Demonstrated experience delivering significant business value within large-scale enterprises ($500M+ organizations) through enterprise, cloud, infrastructure, or technology architecture.
- Proven experience defining technology vision, selecting platforms, and developing architecture strategies that support large-scale organizational growth and future initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience influencing senior-level management, engineering leadership, security teams, and key business stakeholders.
- Experience managing multiple architecture engagements simultaneously and driving planning, stakeholder participation, architecture governance, and conformance.
- Demonstrated experience scaling architecture teams, developing technical talent, and supporting portfolio transformation initiatives.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to connect technology strategy, architecture decisions, business objectives, risk, cost, and operational outcomes.
- Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within matrixed organizations and cross-functional teams.
- Strong ability to identify, prioritize, and balance competing priorities across multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to leverage data and business insights to support technology and architecture decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a complex enterprise environment and influence outcomes without relying solely on organizational authority.
Preferred Qualifications- Masters degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience within the travel, transportation, railroad, aviation, logistics, or related technology domains.
- Experience with Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC), regulatory requirements, security architecture, and enterprise technology controls.
- Experience working with regulatory and compliance frameworks such as PCI DSS, NIST, ISO/IEC 27001, FRA, or other industry-specific standards.
- Experience developing and governing cloud infrastructure architecture across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code, cloud automation, DevOps practices, networking, identity and access management, observability, resilience, and cloud security.
