job summary:
Major Function
This is professional and technical work installing, supporting, maintaining, and safeguarding all components of the organization's network, server, and backup infrastructure. The candidate will exercise considerable independence in managing a hybrid environment combining enterprise network security (Cisco Nexus switches, multi-vendor firewalls) with Windows Server administration, hyperconverged infrastructure (Nutanix), and robust data backup operations.
Responsibilities include recommending and implementing LAN/WAN and network security policies; evaluating hardware, software, and telecommunications equipment; executing enterprise backup and disaster recovery procedures; and automating routine maintenance tasks. Work is performed under the general direction of the Technology Infrastructure Administrator and Principal SCADA Engineer, supporting mission-critical public infrastructure systems.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Network Infrastructure & Security Administration:
Design, install, configure, monitor, troubleshoot, and manage enterprise network assets, including Cisco Nexus Data Center Core switches (e.g., Nexus 9K, 7K, 5K, 2K), configuring VPCs and VDCs for high availability.
Deploy, manage, and audit multi-vendor firewalls-including Palo Alto, Fortinet (FortiGate), and Cisco FTD/ASA platform policies-to protect SCADA and operational infrastructure.
Troubleshoot and maintain core network services, configuring DNS and DHCP via Microsoft tools, Infoblox, or native server systems.
Collect network telemetry, monitor system usage, and run packet captures using tools like Wireshark and SolarWinds to diagnose traffic anomalies and resolve security breaches.
Create, modify, and maintain clear network architectural diagrams using Microsoft Visio.
Server & Systems Administration:
Administer, optimize, and maintain enterprise Windows Server environments, performing daily preventative maintenance and system diagnostics to prevent downtime.
Support hyperconverged server infrastructure (Nutanix HCI experience highly desired).
Monitor Active Directory environments, user permissions, and audit logs to ensure operational compliance.
Data Backups & Automation:
Oversee enterprise backup solutions and routines, verifying data integrity, system restoration readiness, and offsite/disaster recovery backups.
Utilize Python or shell scripting to automate configuration backups, routine network tasks, and operational maintenance workflows.
Policy, Planning & Technical Leadership:
Assist in establishing and enforcing LAN/WAN, server, and security procedures consistent with organizational objectives and industry best practices.
Evaluate vendor hardware, software, and telecommunications products, making acquisition recommendations to management.
Function as a technical lead when assigned, coordinating vendor support, distributing workload, and creating technical documentation for installation and troubleshooting.
Other Important Duties
Conduct technical research on emerging network products, protocols, and security standards.
Perform basic troubleshooting within Linux server environments when required.
Serve as an expert resource for other IT staff and participate in an on-call or after-hours rotation for operational continuity.

Network & Security Expertise:
Strong knowledge of network routing/switching, Cisco Nexus architectures (VPC/VDC), fiber optics, and multi-vendor firewalls (Palo Alto, FortiGate, Cisco ASA/FTD).
Hands-on experience with packet capture analysis (Wireshark) and monitoring software (SolarWinds, Nagios).
Proficiency in creating detailed architecture diagrams in Microsoft Visio.
Systems & Backup Expertise:
Demonstrated expertise in Windows Server administration, Active Directory management, and DNS/DHCP administration.
Experience managing enterprise backup and recovery systems and disaster recovery protocols.
Familiarity with Nutanix HCI or virtualized server environments.
Ability to write Python or administrative scripts to automate backup routines and system tasks.
Soft Skills & Professionalism:
Ability to analyze technical problems, define root causes, and execute prompt resolutions under general direction.
Strong oral and written communication skills to articulate technical recommendations to end-users and leadership.
