Company Overview
Outset is a medical technology company pioneering a first-of-its-kind technology to reduce the cost and complexity of dialysis. The Tablo Hemodialysis System, FDA cleared for use from the hospital to the home, represents a significant technological advancement that transforms the dialysis experience for patients and operationally simplifies it for providers. Tablo serves as a single enterprise solution that can be utilized across the continuum of care, allowing dialysis to be delivered anytime, anywhere and by anyone. The integration of water purification and on-demand dialysate production enables Tablo to serve as a dialysis clinic on wheels, with 2-way wireless data transmission and a proprietary data analytics platform powering a new holistic approach to dialysis care.
Position Overview
Outset is seeking a Junior Software Engineer to join our Cloud Infrastructure & Platform team. In this role, you will contribute to building, operating, and evolving the mission-critical backend systems that power Tablo devices and Outset's application ecosystem. You will work on brownfield systems - adding new capabilities, refining existing features, building tooling, and supporting cloud operations alongside an experienced, highly efficient team.
We are looking for someone who learns fast, thrives across multiple contexts, and communicates clearly. If you are intellectually curious, take ownership of what you pick up, and have already shown you can adapt quickly to new challenges - this is a great place to grow.
Candidate attributes and abilities:
- You learn quickly and embrace unfamiliar territory - you pick up new technologies, systems, and requirements without needing a full playbook handed to you.
- You can hold multiple goals and contexts in parallel without losing clarity on what matters most right now.
- You communicate clearly and proactively - written and verbal - with teammates and across teams. You've been told this before.
- You have a strong ownership mindset: when you pick something up, you see it through and follow up.
- You have a practical appreciation for software quality, best practices, and clean engineering.
- You are comfortable working on existing systems - you understand before you change, and you improve without breaking.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
- Develop and enhance features on existing backend services and cloud infrastructure.
- Support operations: monitor, triage, and resolve platform and service incidents.
- Build internal tooling and automation to improve team efficiency and system reliability.
- Work across multiple services and systems with varying contexts, priorities, and timelines.
- Collaborate with teammates on design, implementation, and code review.
- Participate in on-call support rotation and contribute to operational runbooks.
- Apply AI-assisted and spec-driven development practices where they accelerate quality delivery.
- Can work remote anywhere in Mexico. Infrequent travel to our office in Tijuana and/or San Jose as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on software engineering experience - internship experience counts.
- No specific degree requirement - demonstrated skill and track record matter more than credentials.
- Experience with Java (Spring Boot, Maven) or a comparable backend language and framework.
- Working knowledge of at least a few AWS services (e.g., EC2, ECR, ECS, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, Cognito, SNS, SQS, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, CodePipeline, CodeArtifact).
- Familiarity with containerization and CI/CD pipelines (Docker, Jenkins, or equivalent).
- Demonstrable communication skills - proven ability to express ideas clearly and manage competing priorities across teams.
- Proven track record of fast learning - evidence of independently picking up new tools, systems, or domains and delivering on them.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with PostgreSQL or another relational database.
- Familiarity with Kafka or distributed messaging systems.
- Exposure to static analysis tooling (SonarQube or equivalent).
- Awareness of AI-spec-driven or AI-assisted development workflows.
- Familiarity with microservice architecture patterns and distributed systems concepts.
- Experience contributing to brownfield codebases - understanding existing systems, refactoring, and extending them safely.
