Boeing continued its massive technologist hiring spree in March, outpacing tech-hiring powerhouses such as Amazon, Humana, and Deloitte.

This data comes from CompTIA’s latest job report, which draws its data from Emsi Burning Glass, which collects and analyzes millions of job postings from across the country. Boeing not only outpaced other companies, but also surpassed its notably high numbers from February, when it posted 6,233 technology jobs. Here’s the full chart: 

What’s behind this spike of technologist hiring at the aircraft maker? As we mentioned last month, the company hasn’t announced a new airplane or line of business. However, there have been reports of production issues and slow aircraft deliveries over the past few months, so perhaps this tech hiring is meant to help the company ease its current bottlenecks. (Like many companies, Boeing also works on new products in top secret; it’s not out of the question that all those technologists are working on something like an aircraft that just hasn’t been announced yet.)

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for tech occupations hit 1.3 percent in March, the lowest level since June 2019. According to calculations by CompTIA, employer job postings for technology positions also rose to 412,000 last month, an increase of 29,000 from February. “The already tight labor market just became even tighter as competition for tech talent reaches near-record levels,” Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA, wrote in a statement accompanying the data. “For any employer relying on the old hiring playbook, it’s time to rethink approaches to recruiting and retention.”

For technologists, the current demand for tech talent offers more opportunities for negotiation over things like salary and benefits. If a company needs your skills, they’ll have that discussion—whether they’re a small startup or a major airplane manufacturer.
