Hewlett-Packard’s enterprise-services arm has introduced a suite of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) analytics services designed to help mine insight from the volumes of data flooding organizations. “Enterprises have made significant investments in technology to capture and store data; however, few have developed the talent, tools and processes needed to turn this Big Data into actionable insights,” Danila Meirlaen, vice president of Business Process Outsourcing for HP, wrote in an Oct. 15 statement. While HP claims its services are “technology agnostic” and support a variety of deployments and software platforms, the company is leveraging its own analytics products in the effort: software from HP companies such as Vertica and Autonomy, as well as “innovations” from its HP Labs research division. HP claims the analytics will target a broad swath of functions, including marketing, supply chain, human resources and financing. HP is working hard to adjust Autonomy, which it acquired for $10 billion in 2011. “We have a lot of work to do over the next several quarters to improve Autonomy performance,” Cathie Lesjak, HP’s CFO, said during the company’s Aug. 22 earnings call, “and we will be focused on improving pipeline conversions and execution across the entire Software business.” Autonomy’s technology can analyze massive amounts of structured and unstructured data for meaning. Its products range from data archive and e-discovery tools to intelligent process automation. Customers include EMC, Sybase, and Adobe. HP has no choice but to aggressively expand its data analytics and business-intelligence platforms, as its rivals in the space—including IBM and SAP—are busy building out offerings of their own. HP has also demonstrated a willingness to partner with other companies on analytics. In July, it announced a partnership with analytics company Cloudera to release a platform in the fourth quarter of 2012 that bundles Cloudera’s enterprise software with the HP AppSystem for Apache Hadoop. That was in addition to HP agreeing to resell the Cloudera Enterprise platform (along with future Cloudera products) to clients.   Image: Dragon Images/Shutterstock.com
