Position: System Safety Engineer
Location: Dulles, VA
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced System Safety Engineer to support the development, assessment, and verification of safety requirements for complex aerospace and space systems. This role will focus on identifying and mitigating hazards, ensuring compliance with industry safety standards, and supporting mission success throughout the entire program lifecycle, from concept development through operational deployment.
The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, program management, customers, and external stakeholders to integrate safety into system design and operational processes while maintaining high levels of reliability and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Define, implement, and verify system safety requirements to mitigate operational and design risks.
Perform hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation activities throughout the system lifecycle.
Apply industry-standard safety engineering methodologies and processes to support system development.
Develop and maintain system safety documentation and technical artifacts, including: System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), Preliminary Hazard Analyses (PHA), Functional Hazard Analyses (FHA), System/Subsystem Hazard Analyses (SHA/SSHA), Fault Tree Analyses (FTA), Safety Assessment Reports (SAR), Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Analyses, Software Safety Analyses
Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to resolve safety issues and ensure compliance with safety requirements.
Support design reviews and technical milestones, including System Requirements Reviews (SRR), Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), and Critical Design Reviews (CDR).
Prepare and present safety assessments, technical findings, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
Support launch, operational, and mission assurance activities through safety engineering expertise.
Contribute to the development of new concepts, technologies, and proposals by providing system safety guidance.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or another STEM-related discipline.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in System Safety Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
Strong understanding of system safety principles and hazard analysis methodologies.
Experience applying MIL-STD-882E or comparable system safety standards.
Experience developing and reviewing safety engineering artifacts, including: SSPP, PHA, FHA, SHA/SSHA, FTA, SAR, Software Safety Analyses
Familiarity with launch vehicle, spacecraft, aerospace, defense, or complex mission-critical systems.
Strong technical writing, documentation, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Experience presenting technical information to customers and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting spacecraft, satellite, launch vehicle, or aerospace programs.
Knowledge of launch operations and mission assurance practices.
Experience supporting safety analyses for on-orbit or operational systems.
Familiarity with range safety requirements and compliance processes.
Knowledge of NASA safety standards and aerospace industry safety practices.
Familiarity with OSHA regulations and workplace safety requirements.
Experience conducting software safety assessments and risk evaluations.
Systems engineering experience involving complex integrated hardware and software systems.
