Senior Application Business Analyst – Custom Application Development
Houston, TX | Hybrid: onsite Monday–Thursday, remote Friday | Houston-area candidates or those willing to relocate
About the Role
Our client is looking for a Senior Application Business Analyst to join a team that builds and enhances custom, in-house applications. These applications support operational workflows, data quality, and field and customer experiences across a large network of operational sites.
This is an application development BA role. You’ll work side by side with in-house developers as applications are built and enhanced, and own them over the long term: from discovery and requirements, through design, build, and testing, to release and ongoing production support.
This is not a data, reporting, BI, or integration-only role. Candidates whose experience is mainly dashboards, data warehousing, ETL, or data integrations will not be a fit.
Location
Onsite in Houston, TX, Monday through Thursday, with Fridays from home. This is not a remote role. Candidates must live in the Houston area or be willing to relocate.
BA Skills: Requirements gathering, process mapping, user stories and acceptance criteria, working with development teams, testing and UAT, defect analysis, production support, and stakeholder management
Tools & Technologies: Jira, Confluence, SQL, REST APIs/JSON, Postman, Okta SSO/OIG, Datadog, ServiceNow, and Excel
Ideal Experience: Senior Business Analyst or Business Systems Analyst who has worked directly with development teams building and enhancing enterprise applications, preferably with integration and IAM experience
What You’ll Do
- Own assigned custom applications end to end, building strong functional knowledge of how they work and how the business uses them
- Lead discovery workshops to gather, validate, and prioritize requirements for new features and enhancements
- Write clear, testable user stories, acceptance criteria, business rules, and functional specifications in Jira and Confluence
- Work side by side with in-house developers, architects, and QA through design, build, testing, and release
- Clarify requirements with developers during each sprint, and review delivered functionality against requirements
- Map current- and future-state processes and system dependencies
- Analyze REST APIs, JSON payloads, and integrations, and test endpoints in Postman to find gaps early
- Gather and document IAM requirements, including Okta SSO, provisioning and deprovisioning, and role-based access
- Provide ongoing production support: investigate issues in ServiceNow and Datadog, find root causes, and drive permanent fixes
- Plan tests, lead UAT, triage defects, and secure stakeholder sign-off
- Facilitate Agile ceremonies, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
- Communicate status, risks, and recommendations clearly to technical and business audiences
What You Bring
- 7+ years as a Senior Application Business Analyst or Business Systems Analyst on enterprise applications
- Proven application development experience: you have worked directly with a development team building or enhancing an application, from requirements and user stories through build, testing, and release
- Hands-on production support experience: supporting live applications, managing enhancements and change requests, and resolving production issues
- Long-term ownership of applications, with sustained involvement in the same applications over multiple years
- Excellent written and verbal communication: clear, well-structured requirements, documents, and explanations. The interview includes a short written exercise.
- Hands-on API analysis (REST, JSON, Postman) and SQL for issue investigation
- Agile and hybrid delivery experience with Jira and Confluence
- Strong root-cause analysis and facilitation skills
- A bachelor’s degree in Business, IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
Strongly Preferred
- IAM experience, especially Okta SSO or OIG, user provisioning, and access reviews
- Production support with ServiceNow and Datadog or similar monitoring tools
- Leading cross-functional workstreams, including plans, RAID logs, and status reporting to leadership
Nice to Have
- GIS, mobile, or field operations platforms
- Cloud application architectures and integration patterns
- CBAP, CCBA, PMI-PBA, or Agile certifications
