Role: Sr Power BI Engineer

Role & Responsibilities Overview:
- Build and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards, selecting appropriate visuals and interaction patterns for business users.
- Extract, transform, cleanse, and integrate data from multiple source systems using SQL and Databricks.
- Design and implement Power BI semantic models, including fact/dimension structures, relationships, hierarchies, and business measures. Develop DAX measures and calculations to support KPIs, metrics, trends, segmentation, and advanced analytical requirements.
- Develop scalable and reusable data transformation pipelines in Databricks to prepare curated datasets for analytics.
- Write complex, optimized SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, aggregation, reconciliation, and data quality validation.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders and BI developers to translate reporting requirements into data and semantic-model requirements.
- Optimize SQL, Databricks transformations, semantic models, and DAX for performance and scalability.
- Support deployment, maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement of Power BI datasets, reports, and data pipelines.
Candidate Profile:
- Location - Based out of US (NJ/NY Preferred)
- 4+ years demonstrated experience building Power BI semantic models and business-facing reports/dashboards.
- Strong hands on experience manipulating and transforming large/complex datasets using SQL and Databricks.
- Strong understanding of how source data should be transformed and structured to support reporting, analytics, and semantic modeling.
- Ability to balance data engineering considerations with BI/reporting requirements, rather than treating the data layer and reporting layer independently.
- Domain – some experience in Insurance analytics (preferably Life Insurance)
- Bachelors or Master's degree in data science, economics, mathematics, computer science/engineering, operations research or related analytics areas
Technical skills:
Power BI: Report and dashboard development, semantic modeling, datasets, relationships, hierarchies, calculated measures, filters, drill-through, bookmarks, and interactive visualizations.
SQL: Advanced SQL, complex joins, CTEs, subqueries, window functions, aggregations, conditional logic, data cleansing, reconciliation, and query optimization.
DAX: Measures, calculated columns, filter/context manipulation, time intelligence, ranking, aggregation, KPI calculations, and advanced analytical logic.
Visualization: Selection and design of appropriate Power BI visuals, KPI cards, tables/matrices, charts, slicers, drill-downs, and executive dashboards.
Databricks: Data transformation, data preparation, notebooks, SQL-based processing, curated/analytics datasets, and performance optimization.
Data Modeling: Dimensional modeling, star schemas, fact and dimension tables, relationships, cardinality, surrogate/business keys, and model optimization.
Data Engineering / ETL: Data extraction, transformation, cleansing, integration, validation, and creation of reusable BI-ready data assets.
Preferred complementary skills: Python/PySpark, Databricks Delta Lake, Git/version control, CI/CD, Power BI deployment practices, and familiarity with cloud data platforms.
