Position: Mainframe DB2 DBA Consultant
Location: Candidates must be on site 3 days /week in the Phoenix, AZ metro area. Other approved locations are Chandler, AZ, / Plano, TX / Charlotte, NC / / Jersey City, NJ

The Role:
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Db2 Database Administrator (DBA) with strong hands-on expertise in IBM Db2 for z/OS to support large-scale, business-critical mainframe environments.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration, performance, availability, integrity, maintenance, and recovery of Db2 databases. The role requires close collaboration with application development, systems programming, operations, security, and infrastructure teams.
Responsibilities:
Administer and support IBM Db2 for z/OS databases across development, test, and production environments.
Create, maintain, and manage Db2 objects including databases, tablespaces, tables, indexes, views, and storage-related definitions.
Perform database maintenance using Db2 utilities such as REORG, RUNSTATS, COPY, RECOVER, LOAD, UNLOAD, CHECK DATA, and REBUILD INDEX. IBM documents these utilities as core mechanisms for maintaining, reorganizing, loading, checking, copying, and recovering Db2 for z/OS data.
Perform SQL and database performance analysis and tuning, including review of access paths and indexing strategies.
Monitor database health, performance, capacity, and space utilization.
Support backup, recovery, and disaster recovery activities for Db2 databases.
Troubleshoot Db2 database problems, SQL issues, performance degradation, locking/contention, failed utilities, and production incidents.
Support database schema changes and application implementations through controlled development, testing, and production deployment processes.
Analyze and optimize Db2 objects to maintain database performance and availability.
Work with application developers to review SQL and recommend improvements to SQL statements, indexes, and database design.
Support Db2 version upgrades, maintenance, migrations, and modernization initiatives as required.
Develop and maintain JCL required to execute Db2 utilities and database maintenance processes. IBM notes that Db2 online utilities can run as standard batch jobs, while stand-alone utilities run as batch jobs using JCL.
Participate in production incident resolution, root cause analysis, and implementation of preventive actions.
Maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, standards, and recovery procedures.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong hands-on experience with IBM Db2 for z/OS
- Strong knowledge of:
§ Db2 database administration
§ Tablespaces, tables, indexes, partitions, views, and Db2 catalog
§ SQL and SQL performance tuning
§ Db2 utilities
§ Backup and recovery
§ Database reorganization and statistics
§ Database performance monitoring and troubleshooting
§ Db2 locking and concurrency concepts
§ Db2 storage and space management
- Strong experience with JCL
- Good working knowledge of z/OS
- Experience supporting large, highly available production mainframe environments.
- Experience with production incident and problem management.
- Understanding of change management and controlled production implementation processes.
