Position Summary
The DevOps Automation Engineer designs, implements, maintains, and continuously improves automated software build, test, security validation, deployment, and post-deployment processes across multiple application development projects. Unlike a traditional DevOps role centered on infrastructure provisioning, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), or infrastructure scaling, this position is focused on software delivery automation and CI/CD engineering.
The primary objective is to reduce manual intervention while improving the consistency, reliability, security, testability, and visibility of software builds and deployments. The engineer will work primarily within the existing DevOps ecosystem - Azure DevOps, Azure Pipelines, Jenkins, Git, Cypress, and GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS) - and collaborate with developers, technical leads, testers, security personnel, and system administrators.
Primary Responsibilities
CI/CD, Build, Test, and Deployment Automation
· Design, develop, maintain, and improve automated CI/CD pipelines using Azure Pipelines and Jenkins across multiple applications and Azure DevOps projects.
· Automate builds triggered by commits, pull requests, merges, releases, or other appropriate events, and implement build validation and quality gates before code is promoted or deployed.
· Integrate unit tests, Cypress and other automated functional tests, security scans, smoke tests, health checks, and post-deployment validation into CI/CD workflows; publish results so failures can be quickly identified.
· Automate reliable, repeatable deployments across development, test, staging, production, and other required environments with minimal manual intervention.
· Design deployments so application artifacts can progress between environments without code or pipeline changes; externalize environment-specific configuration, credentials, connection information, and deployment parameters as appropriate.
· Develop reusable pipeline templates, scripts, components, and patterns; provide clear status, logging, failure reporting, notifications, traceability, recovery, and rollback capabilities.
Security, Source Code, and Azure DevOps
· Configure and maintain GHAS scanning and integrate approved secret, credential/password, code, and other security checks into development workflows and pipelines; ensure findings are visible, reportable, and actionable.
· Support Azure DevOps Projects, Repos, Pipelines, and Boards; assist with project/repository configuration, branch policies, pull-request validation, pipeline integration, and Git-based development workflows.
· Assist development teams with complex merge, branch, pull-request, and repository issues; support onboarding and promote documented Git and Azure DevOps practices.
Monitoring, Observability, and Continuous Improvement
· Monitor pipeline execution and recurring build, test, security-scan, and deployment failures; configure actionable alerts, dashboards, and reporting.
· Configure or support application and server monitoring where appropriate, including application logs, availability, health checks, CPU/resource utilization, and application performance using Azure Application Insights, PrometheGrafana, or existing approved technologies.
· Assess existing projects, repositories, build processes, tests, and deployment procedures; identify candidates for additional automation and apply reusable patterns across applications with similar architectures.
· Maintain and enhance automation as requirements change; document pipeline architectures, deployment processes, dependencies, troubleshooting procedures, and operational requirements.
· Evaluate Jenkins, Azure DevOps agents, self-hosted agents/runners, hooks, and related mechanisms for securely executing work against internal resources where network boundaries affect automation; client systems and data operate within a protected internal network while Azure DevOps operates externally.
Required Skills and Experience
· Hands-on Azure DevOps experience, including Repos, Pipelines, Boards, project/repository configuration, branch and pull-request policies, and pipeline agents.
· Jenkins build/deployment jobs and pipeline automation, including integration with source-code events and pull requests.
· Git branching, pull requests, merge/conflict resolution, repository administration, and troubleshooting.
· CI/CD implementation, YAML-based pipeline configuration, and scripting/automation (preferably PowerShell or equivalent).
· Automated build/deployment processes, unit-test integration, Cypress or comparable automated testing, and GHAS or comparable automated code/security scanning.
· Build artifacts and artifact promotion, environment-specific configuration and secure credential management, deployment to Windows/IIS and/or Azure-hosted applications, and troubleshooting build/test/deployment failures.
· Pipeline logging, reporting, alerting, and application and/or server monitoring.
Other Optional Skills
Azure Portal and Azure CLI; Azure Web Apps and Static Web Apps; Azure Application Insights; Azure Key Vault; self-hosted Azure DevOps agents; Prometheus and Grafana; container-based build/test environments and Docker; .NET and React build/test/deployment processes; experience working with applications and data sources behind enterprise firewalls; and experience in environments with formal security and change-management requirements.
Existing-Tools-First Approach
The engineer is expected to maximize the capabilities of the organization's existing, approved technology stack before introducing additional tools or platforms. Azure DevOps, Azure Pipelines, Jenkins, Git, Cypress, and GHAS are the primary automation toolset. Alternative technologies should be recommended only when a requirement cannot reasonably be met with existing approved tools, with the capability gap, benefits, operational impact, security considerations, and support requirements clearly documented.
