Job Title: Sr. Technical Project Manager – Mainframe Modernization
Location: Remote – U.S.
Duration: 6–9 Months initially, with possibility of extension and/or FTE conversion
Work Mode: 100% Remote - travel not required
Position Overview:
Join the customer-facing consulting team of a leading software company and lead mainframe modernization engagements focused on moving applications from the mainframe to lower-cost cloud platforms with minimal source-code changes.
You will work directly with end customers, system integrators, implementation partners, and technical teams across multiple concurrent projects. This is a fast-moving role requiring strong project ownership, customer communication, and delivery leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
• Own project scope, schedule, cost, and quality from start to finish.
• Lead project status meetings, cost forecasting, change control, and risk/issue management.
• Prepare steering committee updates and escalate issues with clear recommendations.
• Lead migration, cutover, and post-go-live stabilization activities.
• Coordinate customers, system integrators, implementation partners, and technical teams.
• Manage multiple concurrent customer-facing projects in a fast-paced consulting environment.
Required Qualifications:
• 8+ years of experience delivering technology projects, including consulting or vendor-side delivery for external customers.
• Hands-on experience with mainframe modernization or migration, particularly in an IBM Z environment.
• Strong understanding of mainframe COBOL; recent project experience is highly preferred.
• Experience working with system integrators and implementation partners.
• Experience managing both Fixed Price and T&M engagements.
• Strong organizational, facilitation, written communication, and executive communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
• PMP or PRINCE2 certification.
• Experience working in regulated industries such as financial services, insurance, or government.
• Experience with project management coaching and process improvement.
