job summary:
The HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) Interoperability Specialist will work closely with other interoperability subject matter experts to support HL7 FHIR interoperability projects. The FHIR Interoperability Specialist plays a vital role in promoting and advancing FHIR to improve interface interoperability across the organization.
This position may require some in-state and possible out-of-state travel. There is also the potential for presentation and public speaking opportunities. Core Informatics staff will assist with emergency response situations when necessary.
As a member of the Office of Informatics and Analytics, this individual will get exposure and experience in the use and development of interoperability standards, like HL7, and will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of informatics projects including system integration, system interoperability, electronic health record implementation, and specific public health reporting projects.

responsibilities:
Key activities for this position will include contributing significantly to strategic FHIR specific projects, building readiness and capacity to adopt public health FHIR solutions, development of a FHIR roadmap, supporting HL7 FHIR interoperability projects such as HL7 Helios FHIR Accelerator focus areas (i.e., implementation support of query and response or aggregate data priority areas), and supporting electronic data interchange (EDI) Interoperability Infrastructure & Architecture enhancement activities in alignment with data modernization efforts.
qualifications:
- Extensive experience with HL7 FHIR (R4 and R5), including Resources, Profiles, Extensions, and Implementation Guides (IGs).
- Proficiency in related healthcare standards like HL7 v2.x, C-CDA, and DICOM.
- Hands-on experience with medical coding systems such as LOINC, SNOMED CT, ICD-10, and RxNorm.
- Strong understanding of RESTful API design and OAuth2/OpenID Connect security protocols
- Proficiency in at least one major language used in healthcare backends, such as Java, C#, Python, or JavaScript (Node.js).
- Proven experience with integration tools like Mirth Connect (NextGen Connect), Rhapsody, or Cloverleaf.
- Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, specifically how they map to FHIR resource structures.
- Familiarity with major EHR vendors (Epic, Cerner/Oracle, MEDITECH) and their specific FHIR sandboxes.
- Solid understanding of HIPAA compliance, the ONC Cures Act Final Rule, and Information Blocking regulations.
- Ability to translate clinical processes (like patient intake or lab results) into technical data requirements.
Preferred:
- Certified HL7 FHIR Proficiency Professional is a major plus.
- Familiarity with cloud services like AWS HealthLake, Azure Health Data Services, or Google Cloud Healthcare API.
- Experience in Agile environments, as interoperability projects often involve multiple stakeholders and iterative testing.
