Job Title : KONG API Management (APIM) Engineer
Location: Chicago, IL, Hybrid

**Experience Requirements**

Total Experience: 8+ years in software engineering, integration, or platform engineering

KONG Experience: 1–2 years of hands-on experience with KONG API Management

**Roles & Responsibilities**

Design, configure, and support APIs using KONG API Management, including gateway routing, plugins, and policy configurations.

Implement and support RESTful APIs and JSON-based integrations.

Implement API security using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, token validation, and rate limiting.

Manage the full API lifecycle including onboarding, versioning, documentation, and deprecation.

Participate in APIM migration initiatives from legacy or alternate platforms to KONG.

Collaborate with application, platform, and security teams to onboard APIs and ensure compliance with enterprise standards.

Troubleshoot API gateway, performance, security, and connectivity issues across all environments.

Monitor API traffic, usage, and performance metrics; proactively identify and resolve issues.

Support CI/CD pipelines for API and gateway configuration deployments.

Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and architecture discussions.

Develop and maintain technical documentation and provide knowledge transfer to support teams.

Operate independently while contributing to continuous improvement of the APIM platform.

**Must-Have Technical Skills**

KONG API Management (hands-on configuration and support)

RESTful API design and development

JSON-based integrations

OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect

API security concepts (JWT, rate limiting, token validation)

API lifecycle management

Version control systems (Git or equivalent)

**Nice-to-Have Skills**

Experience with APIM migration projects

Docker and Kubernetes

CI/CD tools for API deployment and configuration

Cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform

Monitoring and logging tools in API ecosystems

Familiarity with enterprise integration patterns and middleware platforms
