Summary
Position Overview
The UNIX Operations team is seeking an experienced Senior UNIX/Linux Engineer with strong expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of systems administration experience and will be responsible for supporting approximately 300 Linux servers.
This role requires an effective communicator and strong problem solver with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Responsibilities include operational support of the Linux environment, system maintenance, OS patching, automation, and security compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide operational support for enterprise Linux environments
- Perform system tuning to meet application-specific requirements
- Maintain system standardization and automation
- Ensure UNIX/Linux environments remain compliant with technology roadmaps, including OS, hardware, and third-party software upgrades
- Resolve incident tickets in a timely manner
- Remediate OS vulnerabilities identified through regular security audits
- Perform quarterly Red Hat patching to meet strict PCI security requirements
- Install, configure, and maintain Linux operating systems and related software
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure high availability and reliability
- Collaborate with cross-functional IT and business teams
- Participate in a rotating 24x7 on-call Unix/Linux support schedule
- Create and maintain system documentation
- Research and evaluate new technologies aligned with business initiatives
Required Technical Skills
- RHEL Linux 8/9 administration and patch management
- Linux server builds and custom configurations
- Performance tuning for Oracle database servers
- Server security vulnerability management
- SolarWinds monitoring
- Ansible playbook development
- Ansible Automation Platform administration and upgrades
- Red Hat Satellite 6 administration and upgrades
- VMware operational knowledge
- Strong automation skills
- Server migration experience
- Advanced troubleshooting skills
- Strong TCP/IP networking knowledge, including network topology and firewalled environments
Preferred (Nice to Have) Skills
- Storage management fundamentals
- Database administration fundamentals
- Windows administration fundamentals
- Cloud integration basics
- Veritas NetBackup management
- Familiarity with applications such as JBoss, WebSphere, Splunk, and HP ALM
Required Personal Skills
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team
- Strong attention to detail in planning, implementation, documentation, and follow-up
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Team-oriented mindset with experience in collaborative environments
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects and priorities
Education
- Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field OR equivalent professional experience
