At General Dynamics Mission Systems, we develop the solutions that empower warfighters and first responders to perform at their best. We're currently looking for a mid-level Engineering Support Specialist Team Lead and Technical Advisor to support the Common Infrastructure Services (CIS) program.

This is mission support at its core. You will lead a talented team in the creation of electronic technical documentation for submarine combat systems, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance across all ILS deliverables. Your efforts will directly impact fleet readiness, system maintainability, and the performance of some of the U.S. Navy's most advanced undersea platforms.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the development of technical manuals, installation guides, system notes, and Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs)
  • Provide mentorship and direction to a team of technical writers and logistics analysts
  • Participate in engineering design reviews, feature demos, and technical interchange meetings (TIMs)
  • Review and validate technical content to ensure consistency, accuracy, and usability across documentation sets
  • Translate complex engineering designs and system functions into operator- and maintainer-friendly documentation
  • Collaborate with engineers, software developers, system integrators, and Navy stakeholders to gather technical data
  • Develop maintenance procedures, troubleshooting documentation, configuration guides, and training support materials
  • Support Navy system testing and validation events (lab and shipboard), including documentation updates based on test outcomes
  • Represent the ILS team during Configuration Control Boards (CCBs), documentation reviews, and program status updates
  • Drive improvements in documentation practices, compliance with standards, and user experience
  • Some travel may be required for shipboard or lab test events.

What you'll experience:
  • Leadership in a high-impact logistics and documentation team supporting mission-critical submarine systems
  • Hands-on exposure to the AN/BYG-1 combat system and related SWFTS subsystems
  • Opportunities to directly influence system design and lifecycle support strategy
  • Work alongside Navy operators, system maintainers, and top engineers shaping the future of undersea warfare
  • Flexible 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off)
  • Collaborative, high-integrity work culture with a shared mission
  • Manassas, VA on-site facility-home to world-class undersea warfare system development
  • Technologies that aren't just top-notch, they're often top-secret
  • A team of bold thinkers committed to exploring what's next
  • Opportunities to gain new knowledge - as it's discovered

What you bring to the table:
  • Experience with IETMs, technical manual development, and documentation in accordance with DoD standards (MIL-STD-3001, 38784, 24784, 40051-2C)
  • Operational familiarity with SWFTS, CIS, or CCE components
  • Strong grasp of Navy maintenance procedures and philosophies, especially for combat systems
  • Experience working within Navy logistics systems such as CDMD-OA, TDMIS, or SCLSIS
  • Excellent technical communication, documentation, and stakeholder collaboration skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), XML authoring tools (XMLSpy) or similar, and diagramming in Visio
  • Comfortable interpreting schematics, interface documentation, and system configuration artifacts

What sets you apart:
  • Former U.S. Navy Fire Control Technician (FT) with experience on Virginia, Seawolf, Ohio, or 688-class submarines
  • Prior experience working with BYG-1, SWFTS, CIS, or CCE systems
  • Strong leadership skills and a track record of managing priorities under tight deadlines
  • Experience developing content in HTML, XML, PDF, and/or S1000D-compliant formats
  • Background in Navy training development or instructional design
  • Hands-on involvement in Navy test events, shipboard troubleshooting, or operational evaluations
  • Recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) in a relevant domain (e.g., combat systems integration, technical writing, or maintenance planning)
  • Proven conflict management skills
  • Subject matter expert (SME) in one discipline/field and developing fully proficient knowledge in adjacent disciplines/fields
  • Strong leadership skills consistent with a team-based work environment
