Project Overview
We are seeking an experienced Hyper-V Systems Engineer or Technical Trainer for a focused, short-term contract engagement. The goal is to deliver customized training to our in-house Server/Systems Engineers to ensure they can successfully operate, manage, maintain, and troubleshoot our newly deployed Hyper-V virtual environment.
Start Date: Week of January 19th, 2026
Duration: Approximately 1 week of training delivery (flexible scheduling)
Rate: $85 - $105/hour (based on experience)
Location: 100% Remote
Citizenship Requirement: U.S. Citizenship Required
Scope of Work
The consultant will deliver comprehensive operational training focused on the following areas:
Core Training Topics
System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM)
- Daily operations and VM lifecycle management
- Template deployment and customization
- Resource monitoring and capacity planning
- Library management and best practices
Windows Failover Clustering & High Availability
- Cluster administration and maintenance
- Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) management
- Node operations and failover procedures
- Health monitoring and diagnostics
Linux VM Operations (Primary Focus - ~75% of workload)
- Linux guest OS management within Hyper-V
- Integration Services configuration and troubleshooting
- Routine maintenance, patching, and updates
- Performance optimization for Linux workloads
- Common Linux-specific virtualization issues
PowerShell Automation
- Operational scripting for Hyper-V management
- VM provisioning and decommissioning automation
- Reporting and monitoring scripts
- Bulk operations and administrative tasks
Steady-State Operations
- Patching strategies for hosts and guests
- Performance monitoring and capacity management
- Health checks and preventive maintenance
- Backup integration and recovery procedures
Advanced Troubleshooting
- Hyper-V host diagnostics
- Virtual networking and switch troubleshooting
- Storage path and performance issues
- High Availability cluster problems
- Live migration failures
Deliverables
- Training Materials - You may use your existing training materials, customized to our environment, or develop new content as needed (electronic format)
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Document - Comprehensive guide covering:
- Routine administration tasks
- Maintenance schedules and procedures
- Tier 2/3 support escalation procedures
- Common troubleshooting scenarios and resolutions
- Remote Training Sessions - Instructor-led, hands-on training delivered remotely to our engineering team (schedule mutually agreed upon)
- Training Completion Report - Summary of content delivered, team competency assessment, and operational recommendations
Required Qualifications
Must Have
- U.S. Citizenship required (no exceptions)
- Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft Hyper-V and Windows Server environments
- Well-versed and expert-level proficiency in Hyper-V architecture, configuration, and management
- Deep expertise with Windows Failover Clustering (WFC) and Cluster Shared Volumes (CSVs)
- Advanced PowerShell scripting skills for Hyper-V automation and management
- Strong Linux administration experience, particularly managing Linux as a guest OS within Hyper-V environments
- Proven experience developing and delivering technical training to IT professionals
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred
- Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate or equivalent
- System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) administration experience
- Experience with enterprise-scale Hyper-V deployments
- Background in creating technical documentation and SOPs
- Familiarity with various Linux distributions (RHEL, Ubuntu, SUSE)
Ideal Candidate Profile
You are an experienced virtualization professional who has:
- Built, managed, and troubleshot production Hyper-V environments
- Extensive hands-on experience with Linux VMs in Hyper-V (not just Windows workloads)
- Created and delivered technical training or knowledge transfer sessions
- Written operational documentation and procedures for infrastructure teams
- Strong ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and effectively
Work Environment & Logistics
- 100% Remote - All training sessions conducted via video conference with screen sharing
- Flexible scheduling - Training sessions scheduled to accommodate team availability
- Access provided - Read-only access to our Hyper-V environment for demonstration purposes (details discussed during engagement)
- Team size - Training 3-5 systems engineers with varying experience levels
