Role Overview

The DWH Architect will own the design and optimization of the Gold layer data warehouse built on Azure Synapse Dedicated SQL Pool. This role is responsible for defining enterprise-grade data models, performance strategies, and consumption patterns to support BI, reporting, and external data sharing.

The architect will work closely with ETL Architects, Data Engineers, and BI teams to ensure the Gold layer is optimized for scalability, performance, and business reporting needs.

Key Responsibilities

1. Synapse Architecture & Design

Design and govern Azure Synapse Dedicated SQL Pool architecture for the Gold layer.

Define storage, distribution, and workload isolation strategies for MPP processing.

Align Synapse design with upstream Databricks-based Silver layer outputs.

2. Data Modeling & Gold Layer Design

Define dimensional data models using star and snowflake schemas.

Design fact and dimension tables aligned with reporting and analytics use cases.

Establish standards for surrogate keys, slowly changing dimensions (SCD), and conformed dimensions.

3. Performance & Optimization Strategy

Define indexing strategies (clustered columnstore, nonclustered, heap where applicable).

Design partitioning strategies for large fact tables.

Optimize data distribution (HASH, ROUND_ROBIN, REPLICATE).

Establish query optimization and workload management best practices.

4. Reporting & Consumption Alignment

Align Gold layer structures with Power BI and downstream reporting tools.

Define semantic alignment between Gold tables and BI datasets.

Support data sharing and external consumption requirements.

5. Governance & Best Practices

Define naming conventions, data standards, and modeling guidelines.

Review and approve Gold layer designs and changes.

Support performance troubleshooting and capacity planning.

Required Skills & Experience

1. Experience

8–10 years of experience in enterprise data warehousing.

Proven experience designing and optimizing MPP-based data warehouses.

Hands-on experience with Azure Synapse Dedicated SQL Pool.

2. Technical Skills

Strong expertise in Synapse Dedicated SQL Pool architecture.

Deep knowledge of dimensional modeling (star/snowflake).

Strong understanding of MPP concepts (distribution, sharding, parallelism).

Expertise in indexing and partitioning strategies.

Strong experience in query optimization and performance tuning.

Understanding of BI and data consumption patterns.

Experience integrating Synapse with Visualisation tools.

Exposure to Azure Data Share.

Experience with large-scale enterprise reporting platforms.

3. Soft Skills

Strong architectural decision-making ability.

Excellent documentation and communication skills.

Ability to collaborate with engineering and analytics teams.

Experience defining enterprise standards and best practices.
