Microsoft is getting ready to launch a new Xbox Surface gaming tablet, according to rumors. Back in June, there were similar reports about an Xbox Surface tablet that seemed quite legit. Multiple sources have told TheVerge that those rumored specs were true.  Here's a look at what people are saying about the specs and what I think will be likely: The Xbox Surface is said to feature a 7-inch LED display that will support a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720, which I think will be protected by Gorilla Glass (first or second version). Most likely, the gaming tablet will feature a custom ARM processor or an Intel SoC that will paired with a few gigabytes of high-bandwidth RAM (probably 5 GB). The storage unit will be a 250 GB 10k RPM disk drive, which is more than enough, since you can add more storage by using one or more of the 4 USB ports. The gaming tablet will feature an AMD custom-built 28nm GPU, cloaked at 825 MHz, according to Shifted2U's June report. For those interested, the GPU features 1.2 GB of GDDR5 memory and comes with support for Direct 3D 11 and Shader Model 5. Inside this monster gaming device, there should be a custom Windows kernel version. It's still unknown if this new OS will borrow some of the Windows 8 features, but we should expect something close to Xbox Live dashboard. To wrap this up, I have to say that I'm very happy to see Microsoft reinventing itself, much like Apple did when Steve Jobs returned. It's hard to predict the impact an Xbox Surface tablet would have, since there's nothing similar on the market. If the specs turn out to be true, Microsoft will excite existing handheld console users with a viable alternative to PSP, Nintendo and similar products.
