Platform Engineer IV - Kubernetes and ObservabilityLocation: Remote, US
Employment Type: Full-time
Sponsorship: Not available
Role OverviewAs a Platform Engineer IV, you will serve as a senior technical contributor on a team responsible for operating and evolving large-scale infrastructure platforms that support mission-critical, high-transaction systems in a regulated environment. This is a hands-on role focused on Kubernetes, observability, and cloud platform reliability rather than basic operations or "keep the lights on" work.
You will own core platform components, guide technical direction, and mentor engineers while remaining deeply involved in design, implementation, and operations. This role sits at the intersection of scale, reliability, and technical leadership.
Key Responsibilities- Own and evolve the Kubernetes control plane (EKS) and service mesh (Istio) at enterprise scale
- Provide technical leadership for platform engineering and operations related to Kubernetes, observability, and cloud infrastructure
- Lead tooling, support, and reliability practices for observability and logging platforms
- Oversee EC2-based application deployment platforms and other mission-critical internal services in AWS
- Drive infrastructure-as-code and automation practices to improve consistency, reliability, and upgrade velocity
- Collaborate with infrastructure, engineering, middleware, and product teams to ensure platforms enable delivery
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, best practices, and technical guidance without formal people management responsibilities
- Plan and execute upgrades, patching, and platform improvements with minimal business disruption
- Define and track operational metrics aligned with SRE principles, including availability, latency, and error budgets
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 7-10 years of experience in IT systems delivery, operations, and support in complex environments
- 3+ years leading technical engineering efforts or serving as a senior technical contributor
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- Kubernetes and Amazon EKS administration at scale
- Terraform and Helm for infrastructure and platform management
- AWS services including VPC, IAM, EC2, and EKS
- Observability and monitoring tools such as Splunk, Cribl, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and New Relic
- Linux systems administration in RHEL-based environments, including SELinux
- Proven ability to bridge infrastructure and development teams
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to lead by influence and technical expertise rather than authority
Preferred Qualifications- Experience supporting SaaS platforms or high-transaction, high-availability systems
- Familiarity with EC2 application deployment pipelines and replatforming efforts toward cloud-native architectures
- Service mesh experience (Istio, Linkerd, or similar)
- Background in metrics-driven reliability engineering (SLOs, SLIs, error budgets)
- Scripting or programming experience (JavaScript, Python, or similar)
What Will Set You Apart- Comfort operating in large, complex Kubernetes environments with frequent upgrades and change
- Experience optimizing and modernizing cloud platforms after initial migration phases
- Ability to debug observability pipelines and platform components as easily as mentoring peers
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability for platform reliability
- Passion for enabling engineering teams through scalable, well-designed infrastructure
