Power BI Developer with Business Analyst Experience

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Power BI Developer with strong Business Analyst experience to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in Power BI development to create interactive, data-driven dashboards and reports, while also applying your analytical skills to understand business needs, gather requirements, and deliver actionable insights for both internal teams and external clients.

This job is primarily remote, but it includes occasional travel for conferences and in-person meetings with clients.

For this position, candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship and maintain U.S. residency throughout the contract due to operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Power BI Development:

• Design, develop, deploy, and maintain interactive Power BI dashboards, reports, and visualizations.

• Build and optimize Power BI semantic models and datasets, including star schema data modeling, relationships, and measure strategies.

• Develop and troubleshoot DAX measures (time intelligence, trending, variance, rolling periods, KPI logic) aligned to defined metric standards.

• Use Power Query (M) to ingest, clean, transform, and shape data from multiple sources (SQL, Excel, SharePoint/OneDrive, cloud data sources, APIs).

• Optimize performance through efficient queries, data modeling best practices, and report design.

• Manage Power BI Service components including workspaces, refresh schedules, gateways (as needed), and deployment approach.

• Implement report security, permissions, and Row-Level Security (RLS) to ensure controlled access to data.

Business Analysis:

• Collaborate with stakeholders and clients to gather and clarify reporting and analytical requirements.

• Define KPIs and reporting standards, including metric definitions, calculation rules, assumptions, and validation steps.

• Translate business needs into technical specifications for datasets, semantic models, dashboards, and reports.

• Identify opportunities to streamline reporting processes and improve data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency.

• Communicate scope, tradeoffs, and timelines clearly to ensure alignment on deliverables.

Data Management & Quality Assurance:

• Ensure data integrity and accuracy across Power BI datasets, dashboards, and reports.

• Perform validation and QA (reconciliations, outlier checks, grain confirmation) to build trust in reported results.

• Troubleshoot and resolve refresh failures, performance issues, and data discrepancies.

• Document data sources, KPI definitions, and report logic to support ongoing maintenance and user adoption.

Stakeholder Collaboration & Enablement:

• Act as a liaison between business and technical teams to ensure clear communication of requirements and delivery.

• Provide ongoing support to users, including training, troubleshooting, and guidance on Power BI tools and reports.

• Create job aids and light documentation to enable self-service reporting where appropriate.

Continuous Improvement:

• Stay current with Power BI features, best practices, and industry trends related to modeling, performance, and governance.

• Recommend and implement improvements to existing reporting solutions, data workflows, and visualization standards.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience building production Power BI solutions end-to-end (datasets and dashboards).

• 2+ years of experience in a Business Analyst role, including requirements gathering and stakeholder management.

Technical Skills:

• Proficient in Power BI, including DAX, Power Query (M), data modeling (star schema), and Power BI Service.

• Experience integrating data from multiple sources (SQL, Excel, SharePoint/OneDrive, cloud sources, APIs).

• Experience with report security, permissions, and Row-Level Security (RLS).

• Working knowledge of ETL concepts and database platforms (SQL Server, Azure, etc.); strong SQL skills preferred.

Business Analyst Skills:

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail and data validation.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex findings to non-technical stakeholders.

• Experience translating business questions into measurable KPIs and clear technical specifications.

Preferred

• Experience with large capital projects and/or the Construction and Engineering sector (project controls reporting: schedule, cost, forecast, earned value).

• Familiarity with Primavera ecosystem tools (helpful but not required): Primavera P6, Oracle Primavera Cloud (OPC), Unifier.

• Experience with Azure data services (Azure SQL, Data Factory, Synapse) or related data engineering patterns.

• Experience with other BI tools (e.g., Oracle BI Publisher) or database platforms (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle).

• Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate and/or Business Analysis certifications (e.g., CBAP).
