Job Description

The School of Medicine's Office of Research and Graduate Education has an outstanding opportunity for a Full-Time Web Application Developer to support the development and maintenance of web-based applications and tools. This position is responsible for establishing and managing relevant interfaces to web sources and databases as necessary for effective and efficient web-based tools. Finally, this position is responsible for keeping current with new technologies in web application development and web interfaces.

Under the direction of the Associate Director, the Web Application Developer is a member of a team that provides analytical and reporting support to the School of Medicine in the areas of research administration, graduate education and training programs.

The Web Application Developer brings their knowledge of application development and web interfaces to work in collaboration with the team to strategically identify and design solutions and tools. The tools developed by this team not only provide effective analytics and reporting to the School of Medicine but also support efficient data management and improved operations. The Web Application Developer works independently to execute their tasks within a project and is responsible for addressing dependencies between their tasks and those of other team members on the project. This role is responsible for documenting and designing test plans for developed applications, for monitoring application performance and identifying areas for improvement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Web Application Development (70%)
  • Partner with Associate Director on the successful completion of projects by providing expertise during the conceptualization and design process.
  • Independently consult with stakeholders to clarify/confirm project details, coordinate testing, as well as provide technical guidance.
  • Build and maintain advanced, responsive, accessible web applications using modern frameworks and technologies.
  • Create search interfaces where users can input queries or filters that return targeted data on the webpage or form.
  • Develop interactive web forms and applications for data collection.
  • Ensure data validation processes within the application while maintaining responsive designs.
  • Establish and manage the connectivity between web applications and back-end databases.
  • Ensure applications meet UW accessibility, usability, and security standards.

API and Web Services Integration (15%)
  • Design and implement advanced RESTful APIs and web services for data exchange across internal and external systems.
  • Integrate third-party APIs to enhance data systems and applications.
  • Document API endpoints and maintain integration workflows.
  • Monitor API performance and security.

Technical Support and Documentation (15%)
  • Manage web application solutions to ensure continued efficiencies and data validation.
  • Maintain technical documentation and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in production environments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • At least three years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Microsoft Visual Studio or a similar front-end framework.
  • Basic experience with server-side development.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs, JSON, and web service integration.
  • Understanding of relational databases and basic SQL.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Equivalent experience may substitute for degree requirement.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in a university or research-intensive environment.
  • Exposure to biomedical or research data systems (e.g., REDCap, eRA Commons, NIH RePORTER).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms.
  • Knowledge of data privacy and compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power BI, Power Automate).
