Duties & Responsibilities- Provide desktop support
- Install, configure, and maintain computer-based desktop systems running Windows or Macintosh operating systems.
- Maintain the security of the desktops, both physical and operating system.
- Effectively use modern endpoint management systems in the support of desktop systems.
- Support and maintain various desktop-based applications such as MS Office, Outlook, MS Teams, and enterprise applications.
- Meet regularly with unit faculty, staff and leadership to learn about their current and future activities, needs, and resource availability.
- Write documentation and knowledge articles as required.
- Work collaboratively with IT professionals across campus to meet local unit needs and enhance the overall IT environment on campus.
- Communicate effectively with unit leadership and their staff.
- Administer and enhance unit IT services
- Provide IT consultation with units to define problems, identify and implement new and revised services to enhance unit operation.
- Manage unit networking including activation of ports, troubleshooting and resolving problems.
- Install, manage and troubleshoot networked printers and print servers.
- Participate in the identification, evaluation, procurement, and implementation of technology systems and services for customers.
- Facilitate use of centralized, shared, and third-party services to meet unit needs most efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Identify opportunities for units to reduce duplication and overlap in the services and technologies provided by and/or support by the units.
- Proactively identify gaps in available IT services and resources and assist in the development of plans to help fill these gaps.
- Participate in IT projects
- Assist in the development of IT project plans by review of technical steps in the project as well as their estimated duration.
- Communicate effectively with other project team members.
Physical Demands and Working ConditionsThis position involves frequent travel for on-site installation/support of customers at various locations. Position involves frequent bending, lifting, navigating tight spaces (under desks), face-to-face contact with customers, and on-site installation and support. Work is performed in a high-volume office setting with other employees that involves the ability to function while dealing with interruptions and distractions to meet the many day-to-day deadlines. Position involves frequent lifting and moving computers and peripherals which can weigh up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
- College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
3. Demonstrated Windows and/or Macintosh PC support experience, computer hardware experience, supporting productivity software (MS Office) and in a customer service environment.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a technical discipline.
- At least one year administering computers and/or servers in a Windows or Mac OS Enterprise environment.
- Demonstrated experience with supporting MS Teams and endpoint management tools such as MECM (SCCM), Munki, WorkSpace ONE, Jamf, and MS Intune.
- Demonstrated experience with programming/scripting including but not limited to PowerShell, ASP, Visual Studio.NET, C#, and SQL is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Independently diagnoses and resolves standard OS, device, and desktop-application issues across assigned units, without escalation.
- Uses modern endpoint management tools (MECM, Intune, Jamf) to deploy, patch, and maintain devices for assigned units unassisted.
- Independently activates ports, troubleshoots unit connectivity, provisions client access to local and non-local systems, and maintains device security in line with policy.
- Builds ongoing relationships with unit faculty, staff, and leadership through regular meetings, and communicates status and options clearly.
- Writes clear documentation and knowledge articles for supported systems as needed.
- Consults with units to define problems and recommend services; participates in evaluating, procuring, and implementing technology and in using shared services to reduce duplication.
- Contributes to project plans by estimating technical steps and durations, and communicates effectively with team members.
- Independently prioritizes a varied workload across units and adjusts to changing needs, policies, and technical environments without loss of quality.
- Works effectively within the team and shares practical knowledge with peers.
Appointment InformationThis is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $55,000 to $65,700. Salary is commensurate with experience. Hybrid work options may be available for this position, with the ability to be on-site at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus as needed per the University's Workplace Flexibility Policy.
