Clinical Informaticist Job Description

Position Overview

The State of Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals (BHDDH) will be implementing Electronic Health Record (EHR) at two State Hospitals; the Eleanor Slater Hospital (ESH) and the Rhode Island State Psychiatric Hospital (RISPH).

BHDDH is seeking a Clinical Informaticist to support the implementation, configuration, optimization, and ongoing support of the hospital's electronic health record (EHR). This position serves as a liaison between clinical staff and information technology personnel to help ensure that EHR functionality supports clinical workflows, regulatory requirements, and high-quality patient care. The Clinical Informaticist will report directly to the Director of Clinical Informatics and will collaborate closely with other team members to support the hospital's clinical and technological ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Support the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and ongoing optimization of the hospital's EHR across multiple clinical domains.
  • Analyze clinical and operational workflows and translate end-user needs into system functionality, configuration requirements, and process improvements.
  • Design, build, and maintain clinical documentation tools (e.g., templates, order sets, and clinical decision support) aligned with clinical standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in system testing activities, including unit testing, user acceptance testing, go-live readiness, and post-implementation optimization.
  • Provide training, guidance, and at-the-elbow support to clinical staff to promote EHR adoption and effective use of the system.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, data quality, and patient care outcomes through workflow redesign and system optimization.

Qualifications

Experience Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in clinical discipline, Computer Science, Informatics, or a closely related field, required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a hospital or healthcare environment, gained through direct clinical practice or clinical informatics, health IT, or clinical systems support roles.
  • Experience working with EHR platforms such as WellSky, Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or other enterprise healthcare systems.
  • Direct clinical practice experience (e.g., nursing, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology), preferred but not required.
  • Certification or advanced education in health or clinical informatics is preferred and may substitute for clinical experience.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of clinical workflows and healthcare operations.

Additional Skills and Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of clinical workflows and healthcare delivery processes across inpatient or comparable healthcare settings.
  • Working knowledge of electronic health record (EHR) and health information technology.
  • Ability to analyze clinical and operational processes and translate findings into system or workflow improvement recommendations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both clinical and technical resources, serving as a liaison between disciplines.
  • Ability to support system implementation, training, optimization, and change management initiatives.
  • Familiarity with clinical device integration workflows (e.g., IV pumps, bedside monitoring devices) and their interaction with the EHR, including supporting clinical workflows, documentation, and issue triage in collaboration with technical teams.
  • Ability to participate in occasional on-site meetings at hospital locations as needed to support EHR implementation and optimization activities.
