Position Summary

Seeking a Radio Communications Technician to provide hands-on support for Motorola public?safety grade radio systems used in fleet vehicles and dispatch operations across Southeastern Michigan. This role is responsible for programming, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Motorola handheld and mobile radios, associated antenna systems, and the backend components that support dispatch communications.

The ideal candidate has direct experience with police, fire, emergency services, or similar public safety radio systems, including in?vehicle radio installation and configuration to State of Michigan standards.

Key Responsibilities
Radio Programming & Configuration


  • Program and configure Motorola handheld and mobile (truck?mounted) radios to State of Michigan radio standards
  • Utilize Motorola Management Tools to configure channels, talkgroups, profiles, and system parameters
  • Ensure radios align with dispatch and interoperability requirements

Vehicle Radio Installation


  • Install Motorola mobile radios and related equipment in fleet vehicles, including:

    • Mounting radio units and control heads
    • Installing brackets, plates, and mounting hardware
    • Wiring power, grounding, microphones, speakers, and accessories

  • Perform high?quality, professional installations that meet safety, durability, and operational standards

Antenna Installation & Maintenance


  • Install, inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain vehicle-mounted and fixed radio antennas
  • Perform rooftop antenna checks and minor maintenance on a rare / as?needed basis
  • Diagnose signal, grounding, cabling, and antenna-placement issues

Dispatch & System Support


  • Understand and support the backend mechanics of radio systems that integrate with dispatch operations
  • Support troubleshooting of system connectivity, performance, and reliability
  • Coordinate with internal telecom, IT, and dispatch stakeholders as needed

Field Support


  • Travel throughout Southeastern Michigan to support fleet vehicle radios
  • Provide troubleshooting and corrective maintenance in the field
  • Support critical operations and storm-related response as required
  • Maintain accurate service, installation, and maintenance documentation

Required Qualifications


  • Hands-on experience programming Motorola handheld and mobile radios
  • Demonstrated experience installing radios in vehicles, including cutting, mounting, and wiring
  • Working knowledge of public safety radio systems like those used in police and fire vehicles
  • Ability to access rooftops and elevated locations for antenna inspections (infrequent)
  • Reliable personal transportation

Preferred Qualifications


  • Familiarity with State of Michigan radio standards
  • Background in police, fire, emergency services, or municipal radio communications
  • Experience using Motorola Management Tool for radio configuration
  • Experience supporting fleet, utility, or mission?critical communication systems

Travel & Reimbursement


  • This role supports locations across Southeastern Michigan
  • Mileage reimbursement provided at the Federal mileage rate
  • Reliable transportation is required
