Position Overview
Our client is a value-added reseller and technology solutions provider serving customers throughout the Southeastern United States, with a significant focus on K-12 school districts and higher education institutions.
We are seeking a Senior Server, Storage & Network Engineer to design, implement, and support customer infrastructure solutions across server, storage, virtualization, backup, and networking environments.
This role is ideal for a well-rounded infrastructure engineer who can work across traditionally separate technical areas. Server and storage expertise is a major focus, but this person must also be capable of configuring and troubleshooting the networking required to make the complete environment operational. We are not looking for someone limited exclusively to server administration or a Cisco/network-only background.
The engineer will work directly with customers, lead technical implementations, troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues, and take projects from planning through deployment and operational handoff.
Experience within a VAR, MSP, systems integrator, or professional services environment is highly desirable. Experience supporting K-12 or higher education customers is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Design & Technical Consulting
Assess customer infrastructure and recommend solutions based on technical requirements, existing environments, staffing, budgets, and long-term needs.
Design secure, reliable, and scalable server, storage, virtualization, backup, and network solutions.
Translate customer requirements into practical infrastructure designs and implementation plans.
Partner with sales and account teams during technical discovery, solution validation, demonstrations, and proposal development.
Develop technical designs, bills of materials, statements of work, and implementation estimates.
Clearly explain technical recommendations and tradeoffs to IT teams, administrators, and organizational leadership.
Implementation & Project Delivery
Lead customer infrastructure deployments, migrations, upgrades, and technology refresh projects from planning through final handoff.
Install, configure, and troubleshoot physical servers, hypervisors, SAN/NAS storage, and backup platforms.
Configure and troubleshoot switches, routers, firewalls, wireless networks, VPNs, VLANs, and routing.
Configure Windows Server and/or Linux environments, directory services, DNS, DHCP, segmentation, and infrastructure integrations.
Support on-premises Exchange, Microsoft 365/Office 365, Google environments, and hybrid infrastructure.
Implement high availability, replication, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions.
Coordinate with project managers, customers, vendors, and subcontractors to keep implementations within scope and schedule.
Validate completed environments, document configurations, train customer teams, and provide effective operational handoffs.
Support & Engineering Operations
Serve as a senior escalation resource for complex infrastructure issues spanning server, storage, virtualization, backup, and networking.
Diagnose performance, availability, configuration, and connectivity problems and perform root cause analysis.
Work directly with manufacturer support teams to resolve hardware and software issues.
Apply security hardening and infrastructure configuration best practices.
Automate repetitive deployment and administrative tasks where appropriate.
Maintain technical documentation, implementation standards, and reusable deployment procedures.
Mentor other engineers and maintain relevant manufacturer certifications.
Education Customer Support
Design and support infrastructure for multi-campus K-12 and higher education environments.
Account for large student/staff device populations, instructional schedules, online testing, enrollment periods, and limited maintenance windows.
Support infrastructure requirements for learning platforms, student information systems, research, and administrative applications.
Address student data privacy, web filtering, secure access, identity, and network segmentation requirements.
Contribute technical documentation for education procurement and E-Rate projects when applicable.
Understand the unique budgeting, funding, purchasing, and procurement considerations within K-12 and higher education environments.
Required Qualifications
7+ years of progressive experience in infrastructure engineering, implementation, professional services, or advanced technical support.
Strong hands-on experience across enterprise servers, storage, virtualization, and networking, with deep expertise in at least one of these areas.
Strong server/storage background combined with the ability to independently configure and troubleshoot network infrastructure.
Experience delivering customer infrastructure deployments, migrations, upgrades, and refresh projects from planning through completion.
Experience with Windows Server and/or Linux, directory services, and enterprise virtualization platforms.
Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing, switching, wireless networking, firewalls, and VPNs.
Experience with SAN/NAS storage, backup and recovery platforms, replication, and high-availability environments.
Ability to troubleshoot issues across interconnected infrastructure technologies rather than operating within a single technical silo.
Strong customer-facing communication, documentation, and project coordination skills.
Ability to independently manage multiple customer engagements and work effectively at customer locations.
Willingness to travel throughout the Southeastern U.S., including overnight travel when required.
Availability for occasional scheduled evening or weekend work associated with customer deployments and maintenance.
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
K-12 school district and/or higher education technology experience.
Previous experience with a VAR, MSP, systems integrator, or manufacturer professional services organization.
Experience supporting multiple external customer environments rather than solely one internal corporate IT environment.
Familiarity with education purchasing, budgeting, E-Rate, and public-sector procurement.
Experience supporting technical discovery, solution architecture, and scope development.
Experience with hybrid cloud environments, Microsoft 365 Education, Google Workspace for Education, and identity integrations.
Automation experience using PowerShell, Python, Bash, Ansible, or similar tools.
Relevant server, storage, virtualization, networking, backup, cloud, or security certifications.
Success in This Role
Success will require someone who can see the entire infrastructure environment, not simply one piece of it. The right engineer will be able to walk into a customer environment, understand how the server, storage, virtualization, and network components interact, and take ownership of delivering a working solution.
Successful engineers will consistently deliver projects within scope and schedule, resolve complex technical problems, provide customers with clear documentation and knowledge transfer, and build trusted long-term relationships with customer technology teams.
Interview Process
The anticipated interview process includes an initial get-to-know-you conversation, followed by a more in-depth technical interview covering server, storage, virtualization, and networking experience. Finalists will likely meet with senior company leadership, potentially including the company President.
