Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Web Accessibility Consultant to support a large, complex public-sector digital environment. The consultant will be responsible for identifying web accessibility issues, advising on remediation, and critically helping establish repeatable processes, standards, and resources to ensure accessibility is embedded into future design, development, and content workflows.
This engagement focuses on both immediate accessibility improvements and long-term sustainability, enabling internal teams to proactively prevent accessibility issues going forward.
Key Responsibilities
Accessibility Audits & Issue Identification
- Conduct accessibility assessments of public-facing websites and digital applications using WCAG 2.1 / 2.2 standards.
- Identify and document accessibility issues related to:
- Navigation and information structure
- Keyboard and assistive technology access
- Color contrast, typography, and visual design
- Forms, interactive elements, and media
- Content and document accessibility (including PDFs and downloadable resources)
- Prioritize issues based on risk, user impact, and remediation complexity.
Remediation Guidance & Quality Review
- Provide clear, actionable remediation guidance for developers, designers, and content authors.
- Collaborate with technical teams to review fixes and validate accessibility improvements.
- Support accessibility testing during development and prior to release.
Process, Standards & Resource Development
- Design scalable accessibility processes that integrate into:
- Design and UX workflows
- Development and QA practices
- Content creation and publishing cycles
- Create reusable resources, including:
- Accessibility checklists and standards
- Design and development guidelines
- Content authoring best practices
- Testing protocols and documentation
- Recommend tools and governance practices to support ongoing compliance.
Training & Enablement
- Support knowledge transfer through guidance, documentation, and light training for internal teams.
- Help build internal capacity to identify, address, and prevent accessibility issues independently.
Reporting & Communication
- Produce audit findings, remediation summaries, and executive-level updates.
- Track progress over the engagement and flag risks or dependencies early.
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience conducting web accessibility audits in large, multi-site environments.
- Strong working knowledge of WCAG 2.1 / 2.2, ARIA, and inclusive design principles.
- Experience working with designers, developers, QA, and content teams.
- Ability to translate accessibility requirements into practical implementation guidance.
- Experience creating standards, documentation, and repeatable processes.
- Familiarity with accessibility testing tools (e.g., Axe, WAVE, Lighthouse, NVDA, VoiceOver).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting K 12, education, government, or public-sector organizations.
- Knowledge of ADA, Section 508, and public-sector accessibility requirements.
- Experience working within CMS platforms and enterprise web ecosystems.
- Experience navigating large stakeholder groups and governance models.
