Job Details
Position Overview
We are seeking a Paint Quality Engineer to lead and support quality initiatives within the paint shop. This role will focus on ensuring surface finish excellence, driving root cause analysis for defects, and implementing process improvements across pretreatment, e-coat, primer, basecoat, and clearcoat operations.
Key Responsibilities
Drive paint quality performance across all stages of the paint process, including pretreatment, e-coat, primer, basecoat, and clearcoat
Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for paint defects such as runs, sags, dirt, orange peel, adhesion issues, and color variation
Partner with manufacturing, process engineering, and suppliers to improve paint application processes and material performance
Develop and maintain paint quality standards, inspection criteria, and control plans
Monitor key quality metrics and implement continuous improvement initiatives to reduce defects and rework
Support new product launches by ensuring paint quality requirements are defined, validated, and achieved
Conduct audits of paint processes, equipment, and materials to ensure consistency and compliance
Collaborate with suppliers on coatings, chemicals, and application systems to resolve quality issues
Support training of production teams on paint quality standards and defect identification
Participate in layered process audits and ensure adherence to established procedures
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field
3+ years of experience in automotive paint, coatings, or surface quality engineering
Strong understanding of automotive paint processes, including pretreatment, e-coat, and topcoat systems
Experience with paint defect analysis and corrective action methodologies
Familiarity with quality tools such as FMEA, control plans, SPC, and root cause analysis
Experience working in a high-volume manufacturing environment
Skills and Competencies
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a hands-on approach
High attention to detail, particularly in surface finish and cosmetic quality
Ability to work cross-functionally with manufacturing, engineering, and suppliers
Strong communication skills and ability to influence at multiple levels of the organization
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment
