Summary

Company:
Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

Job Area:
Engineering Services Group, Engineering Services Group > Technical Support Engineering

General Summary:

As a Staff Lab Engineer, you will be a senior individual contributor responsible for enabling, sustaining, and optimizing complex lab systems and infrastructure in support of Server CPU Power & Performance development. This role requires broad technical expertise, strong engineering judgment, and the ability to operate independently on complex, ambiguous assignments.

You will partner closely with CPU, platform, firmware, and infrastructure engineering teams, driving lab readiness, system reliability, and execution efficiency. The Staff Lab Engineer is expected to influence lab standards, resolve advanced system and equipment issues, and contribute to long-term improvements that impact multiple programs.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Operates independently on complex, non-routine assignments with minimal direction.
  • Owns end-to-end bring-up, configuration, validation, and deployment of systems under test supporting Server CPU power and performance characterization.
  • Applies advanced technical judgment to debug and resolve system-level issues spanning hardware, firmware, OS, connectivity, and lab infrastructure.
  • Partners cross-functionally with CPU, platform, firmware, software, and infrastructure engineers to ensure test readiness and efficient data collection.
  • Drives root-cause analysis of recurring lab, system, or equipment failures and implements sustainable corrective actions.
  • Defines, refines, and standardizes lab processes, workflows, and best practices in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Evaluates lab equipment, tools, and system architectures; provides input to selection, configuration, and scalability decisions.
  • Communicates technical status, risks, and mitigation plans clearly across teams and stakeholders.
  • Acts as a technical resource for other lab personnel; may provide guidance or informal mentoring to less-experienced staff.
  • Manages lab assets, inventory accuracy, system orders, and hardware lifecycle tracking with accountability for data quality.
  • Coordinates with vendors and internal service teams for equipment calibration, repair, and support.
  • Utilizes issue and project tracking systems to document progress, prioritize work, and manage dependencies across multiple programs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience executing and optimizing test plans based on engineering requirements with limited guidance.
  • Strong ability to interpret schematics, datasheets, and PCB layout files (e.g., Allegro).
  • Proficiency with lab and measurement equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power analyzers, and related instrumentation.
  • Extensive experience assembling, configuring, and deploying semiconductor R&D test systems.
  • Proven ability to identify test equipment or infrastructure issues and lead resolution through documentation and preventative improvements.
  • Advanced system-level troubleshooting skills across hardware, firmware, BIOS, and OS layers.
  • Ability to configure and power up complex systems with required components, socketed parts, and validated FW/BIOS images.
  • Experience working in multi-OS environments; Linux required, Android a plus.
  • Advanced PCB rework and soldering skills a plus.
  • Experience with inventory management and asset tracking systems.
  • Familiarity with issue and project tracking tools such as Jira.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for conveying technically complex information to diverse audiences.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently transports, installs, and racks equipment up to 30 lbs.
  • Performs tasks while standing, sitting, or working at varying heights.
  • Uses computers and test equipment for extended periods (6+ hours/day).
  • Engages in continuous communication with engineers, vendors, and cross-site teams, both in person and remotely.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate's Degree or higher preferred

Experience:
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in semiconductor R&D, lab engineering, testing, measurement, or related roles in the semiconductor industry.
