Senior Communications Technician

Direct‑Hire | Full-Time Salary + Benefits + PTO
Location: Columbus, Indiana | Up to 40% Travel | 24x7 On‑Call Support
 
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Communications Technician to join our IT team. In this role, you''ll support and maintain a wide range of communication systems across the region while working both independently and collaboratively with field teams.
 
If you enjoy hands‑on technical work, solving problems in the field, and supporting critical communication systems, this role offers strong variety, autonomy, and long‑term stability.

What You’ll Do

  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot:
    • Voice and data systems
    • SCADA
    • Video, microwave, and satellite communication equipment
    • Supporting infrastructure
  • Provide on‑site support for local projects and system upgrades.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, fault isolation, and issue troubleshooting.
  • Direct and oversee local contractors performing telecom installation or maintenance.
  • Deliver first‑level training and support to field operations personnel.
  • Act as the primary liaison between field operations and the IT organization.
  • Help enforce field standards and provide feedback to engineering teams.
  • Participate in a 24x7 on‑call rotation.
  • Travel up to 40% throughout the region (Indiana and parts of Illinois and Ohio).

What You Need

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate’s degree in Electronics OR 7+ years of equivalent electronics experience.
  • 7+ years of hands‑on experience installing or maintaining telecommunications systems, including:
    • Wireless data systems
    • SCADA
    • LAN cabling
  • Experience with phone systems or microwave communications is a plus.
  • FCC license preferred.
  • Network certification (e.g., CCNA) is a plus.
  • Ability to use telecom test equipment and field‑support software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Comfortable working without direct supervision and managing priorities in the field.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills when working with internal teams and external clients.
  • Ability to work outdoors and safely operate a motor vehicle.
